Xylem Paipos are back

I just noticed that Josh Klein is building customized classic and derivative Paulownia paipos again. https://xylemsurfcraft.com/ I have two of his boards. He is an old school craftsman and good soul. I have ridden his boards in east coast slop and demanding Costa Rica heavy breaks. He has a new boar...

Re: paipo paulownia with rib?

I was able to vacuum 3mm paulownia with cork in a sandwich and retain the target flex and rocker. However, it got too heavy due to infusing too much epoxy to the cork so was unusable. There are solutions to that problem. By the time I got around to a 2nd shot, the 3mm paulownia source disappeared, M...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

Your shaping against batons makes sense especially since you are using two thin foam sheets to make the initial sandwich. If I have it right then the initial lay up is foam bottom, 6 oz glass middle, and foam top. Weights are used on top to push the thin flexible sandwich against the batons. The key...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

What adhesive do you use to adhere PE etc. to the internal sandwich structure? The BB builders use heat welding for plastic to plastic but its harder to find an adhesive for plastic to epoxy/fiberglass that is effective but not nasty. Epoxy gets a mixed review at best. Barge contact cement seems to ...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

I am trying to build flex into my board as well. I have done a lot of mat riding where you really work shape shifting. You actually turn by twisting the mat (nudge the rail upward on the opposite side of the turn ). The floppier the mat, the more suction to take you down the wave during take off... ...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

are your wings added on or part of the core airex core? Do you have any pics or dimensions of the core before adding the soft shell? Which of the airex foams do you use? Its an interesting candidate to address some of my pursuits: * stringerless boards with just the right amount of flex and damping ...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

following are the closest boards I could find to your wings. Mostly the wide back. Except that instead of having distinct dorsal fins the entire board has some delta shape characteristics. ' K. Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

C, Wow! now that is interesting! I would love to see the view of tail from the rear on the same plane as the board as well. I like your approach: build composite for flex control / basic rocker shape and then add PE for buoyancy and shape refinements. That's opposite of convention but makes sense to...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

B, Thanks for the Pics and comments! If I am seeing your preferred green board correctly then it could be described as two concaves with outsides swept up to the rail edge more sharply then the sweep to the center. That sharp sweep creates the "wing". The peak of the center is close if not...

B, Thanks for the additional pics. I have a completely different view of the red board now. Here is the 48x19x1" single concave I recently built for shore breaks: IMG_20200514_145721130.jpg Here is my Bonzer: IMG_20200305_101156820.jpg Here is an example of a typical BB with a quad concave: qua...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

B, I just reread your Aug 2018 Finless Observations comments. My take home is that the finless board was faster and more natural feeling down the line but you did better when you mounted the 2" fins at a break that required more emphasis on turning, Or, were you simply saying that you decided t...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

B, Thanks for the reply. I would love to build a finless that turned and stuck steep faces as well as my Bonzer. I have seen your prior comments with great interest. Thats a great shot of the green board from the rear. What happens to the concaves forward? Is it a single to double concave like the B...

Quad Concave Body Board Study

I am getting ready to build a fin-less board. I have been looking at the trend in Body Boards to use quad concaves. The shallower inner set is for turning and taking a high line and the outer set to move water out the back fast and to further help with turning when sunk. Most of the BB makers have a...

Re: Greetings from the Island thats not an Island.

My thin, narrow 48" Xylem board also has a convex bottom (side to side). The convex element helps it turn fin-less. Put the convex side of a spoon next to water flowing from a faucet and you will feel it pull in. I enjoy the board much and it is the best of my quiver for duck diving due to its ...

Re: Am I asking for too much?

I ride 4GF and G-Mat surf mats in conditions from tiny to OH+. There are fatter mats available for small conditions but I find that technique on an all around mat can do the job in small junky conditions.. Less air (I mean barely any) makes catching waves easier (reverse rocker suction effect) and t...

Re: Plywood and cork

I have been in slow-mo on a cork core project with each step weeks and even months apart. I will give a full report when I actually finish sometime in this decade. I was initially going to use titebond III to adhere cork to paulownia ply but the titebond manufacturer I called raised concerns. I turn...
