Re: Leash for fiberglass paipo/bellyboard?????
Rod, I wonder if boards with more flotation are more likely to spring back? Maybe this is a good way to stay calm during a wipeout - focus on what the legrope is doing. Brands may also vary - I recall the coiled leashes going straight but not much else. Regarding whether the quality varies - no idea...

Re: Leash for fiberglass paipo/bellyboard?????
I've never had trouble with coiled leashes springing back. Years ago there was a time this was a very real hazard with leashes on stand-up boards. Having a whole lot of leash just seems to be asking for getting it wrapped around you. I've never actually lost my boardies like RNT but have come close ...

Re: Leash for fiberglass paipo/bellyboard?????
I use a bicep leash but sometimes they slip down my arm in bigger waves. If I tighten them too much they can be a bit unpleasant. I'm curious what others think.

Re: Latest T-Belly
JBW - if there is power in the water, a thin board just flies over flat sections. The wide tail is the key rather than the overall volume. They are a bit like mats - add some power to the wave and the 4th gear kicks in.

Re: Fin recommendations
Rod, I missed the question, sorry about that. The fin is 3 1/2" high and 3 1/8" long. These are used as twin fins. I would probably go a little shorter, but this is just me. A bit more bite than the shallow fins, but also some noticeable drag at times. I changed fins between surfs. I haven...

TP,
I've experimented with AKU but life is too short for me to really put the time in to learn it properly. If it was my livelihood I'm sure it would be a different story. I'll keep an eye out for the version with the re-sizer.

TP,
Not hard at all???? I was hoping there was function like on photo re-sizing, where you select a % of the original and viola. I was sent a brd file of an original Simmons and was curious what it would look like as a 4'6".

Re: Latest T-Belly
TP. I've a thinner board (one of John Galera's designs but the design is completely different - see http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/JohnGalera/JG_2009-0922.shtml ) These boards have 2 x 12 oz glass jobs and my latest have 3 x 6 oz. The latter also has a stringer. There's some noticeable flex in ...

Re: Latest T-Belly
TP,
Thanks. More volume does offer the opportunity to arm paddle - handy if you want to make ground or your legs are cramping, but with every pro there is a trade-off. If a 1/2" ply paipo is 4.6L volume, 15 litres should be fine by me.

Re: Latest T-Belly
Do you use AKU shaper? I'm wondering what the volume of your boards are? I have been am thinking of board # 3 in a series, The volume on # 1was 30.07 litres, # 2 was 20.48, # 3 I'm thinking 15 litres. Less float = easier duckdiving. I've noticed no difference in planing speed with the thinner board ...

Re: Help me pick boards out of this wood
Personally, I'd like something a bit wider -18-19". There is always the option of buying an extra piece of wood gluing it to one of the other pieces and not having to worry about squeezing two boards out.

Re: UK bellyboarding history
Poobah, I agree it is a great piece for a number of reasons. I was also sent this link recently - http://tomwegenersurfboards.com/307/wood-bodyboards-english-and-japanese/ It is interesting because it has photos of both the UK bellyboards and a Spanish Amstel board (revival of the planky or txampero...

Re: Pumpkin Seed
Is the widest point about a 3/4 down the board toward the tail or is this just my eye playing tricks. The rail looks like half an almond or is this also an optical delusion on my part.

1903 Japanese paipo
I was sent this link courtesy of the L’association Surf Art Festival. Never seen reference to early Japanese surfing, so this is doubly interesting: http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0963539056

I particularly enjoyed the experience of sharing some of Buzzy's story. He was at pains to acknowledge his peers and his roots. I suspect he also posted a few times on the forum but was very low key. A sad time for those who knew him.
