Re: hello from a new paipoboard rider
Hello Hydro-Skiper,
I believe there is a paipo rider on PI and BJ is on the west coast. Jamie Farfor surfed around the Mornington Peninsula and made paipo in the 60s based on the Paipo Nui boards.
I'm hoping to do a day trip to PI or the peninsula in May, as a side trip to Lorne.

Re: Something different
I've asked three surfboard shapers to make me paipo. Two of these guys worked out really well. But, it required me to know what I wanted and they did fine tuning. The third guy reckoned he got some foam but didn't have the time to work on what I wanted. I think it would be harder to just go to a sha...

Re: Something different
Cuttlefish, Let me know how you get on &the cost. A guy from the gold coast was wanting a paipo and was having trouble getting one shaped. He'd been quoted $1000. I suggested he try Tony Dragan up your way - a kneeboarder I know said Tony was willing to experiment. The fishfry site has lots of i...

Something different
Dick van Straalen is a respected shaper of many decades experience. He's the guy who shaped the next big thing board.

It's a wonder more people don't get injured riding waves like these. Good luck to them. It must be amazing to ride a wave like these, but, you have to be prepared to pay the price.

Cuttlefish, I bought yellow dot vipers at a bodyboard shop at Burleigh. Not sure if they only have 7s. http://www.burleighbodyboardshop.com.au/ You could try http://www.bodyboardshop.com/ I ordered UDTs from the US (before the Oz dollar improved). Sizing is a bit difficult. I ground them down a bit ...

Re: The next big thing
I didn't see any such boards on his site but he does offer good surfing advice: "Most importantly though, be good to one another in the water. We are all out there to do the same thing."

We could ask Stan what he thinks.
On another note, one of the museums near Manhattan Beach may know of Crabb.

Poobah, Have a look at Larry Goddard's paipo interview - http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/LarryGoddard/LarryGoddard.shtml Search for Crabb or scroll down to the Appendix. In addition to some text there is a drawing of the 'The skegless plywood "Ventral Vindicator" paipo board made by Bo...

Re: The Beach Coaster
Surf shooting was another term. As surfing developed in little pockets, like surfers still do, lingo develops. I've been doing some research into prone surfing in France and Spain. Planking was a term used in places, wave runners, my favourite is the txampero (the gadget that allows someone to take ...

Vogue ski bellyboard
DSCN2552 (160 x 120).jpg DSCN2550 (160 x 120).jpg I was sent these photos which were taken yesterday at a single fin competition, where there was also a board display. Rather than a dodgy Aussie board,it is possible that it is an import. Check out the logo on this water ski from the Vogue Ski Compa...

Re: The Beach Coaster
Poobah,
A great find for a number of reasons. It contains a description of how people rode the boards of the time, it suggests not only use but people were thinking about how to improve performance.
There is interesting stuff to be found among patents.

Re: The next big thing
These sorts of boards are being ridden by competent surfers. Most guys would struggle to catch waves on them and being willing to return to the bottom of the pecking order is a different story again.
As I mentioned there is an irony to all this, being something new.

There was a certain irony about my post which seems to have been lost. Uncle G, thanks I now know why my sleep is so rooted. It's that pineal gland. Uncle G, also appreciates some Australian humour. What is the connection between wattles & homosexuals? See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f_p0CgP...

The next big thing
Surfing World is an Australian surfing magazine first published in the 1960s. It was a dominant mag for a while, almost folded and has had a bit of a resurgence in recent years, with a retro type feel. The latest issue (#322) has a page on David Rastovich, who has been riding glassed boogie boards w...
