Re: Bodyplane/paipo
My friend from Hawaii told me how he and his friends--in their youth--would steal McDonald's food trays and use those as boards. And you see all the different types of Japanese and African handmade boards, & skimboards--this leads me to believe that anything works. True, depending on what you m...

Hmmm, prone jet ski. At least jet skis have redeeming quality of being able to do rescue in heavy surf.
These I think just plain nasty bit of business!

Re: which resin for plywood ?
We do have various degrees of snark here. I think it's a legit question and yes, poly will work just fine. Just in case, depending on oil content of wood, might want to apply a very thin "cheater coat" of resin first to semi-seal it, then after that is fully set, do whatever is next. Glass...

Yes and do read that riding guide I posted link to as it can be very helpful. When actually in the water on your mat, your mantra should likely be "Less is More" as a reminder to make all control actions gentle, fairly small, and smoooooooooth. Soon enough you will likely be saying :o :o :o

Careful, Zensuni. You may soon be so addicted that your hard boards gather dust!
If you haven't seen it, this guide will be very helpful indeed

Surf mat--super comfortable for long go outs, up out of water so warm but most of all easy to catch waves and super fast and maneuverable even in tiny gutless mushburgers. Really no down side at all

Re: Can you kneeride a plywood paipo ?
Atlantasurfer and Bob those are both great fun! I went to college in Santa Cruz starting in 1968 and had a wee fish kneelo shaped for my out of an old board I stripped; John Mel did the deed as he was one of the to go-to shapers around so I went to him. One of the best boards I ever had! But pretty ...

Re: Can you kneeride a plywood paipo ?
I did it for a year or so in .ate 60's inspired by a friend. Very narrow (base and tip) and fairly shallow glassed on fin, board was only about 40" or so long and 18-19" wide (just sort of guessing but in that ball park. Did not work much in small mush but once a bit of juice under it, ver...

Re: Which paipo for hollow waves ?
Josh Klein, the Xylem Surfboards guy, makes a small hole a couple of inches from the nose and knots the end of the "leash cord" after slipping it through the cord hole and fastens the other end of the leach to his wrist or biceps. I did this many years ago on fiberglass spoon kneeboard. M...

1967 went to San Onofre on really big South swell (8 ft faces maybe) with my high school science teacher who was a total mad mad former pro football player, surf rat Chinese-Hawaiian from HI. He road a balsa paipo shaped like a milder version of the yellow board. Totally ripped, high speed carves al...

Re: Which paipo for hollow waves ?
When the wave slows down or gets weak, try pushing the board forward and kick hard, just like you would when taking off. Pull the board back under you when you regain speed. Paipos can transition flat sections as well as any longboard or SUP doing that. Very similar to mat surfing tech for super ea...

Didn't I read in one of the interviews someone saying that so far as they know (growing up and riding that way) Superman style was just that, only for style, done because it was closest to what they had done bodysurfing but not for any functional reason?

Re: Grabbing the rail
In my limited mat experience I found hand on the rail not to work, (tried and failed) found hands both on the nose to work better, squeezing the outer nose on bottom turns. Different body mechanics but same same. If you find you can drive on a rail, hold an edge in hollows, it is working. End resul...

Re: Grabbing the rail
It is a standard mat technique. Grabbing the side opposite the wave creates a pressure build-up on the wave face's side to create an edge and hold the wall. Guess you might also say that most mat riders use mats at "low inflation" as they seldom fully inflate their mats. The mats are as f...
