Re: New plywood paipo

I haven't noticed this with the Bodypo but the one home built board I have with a cork deck I ended up sealing the cork with Barge Cement. I guess the Bodypo is made of some composite cork which is mixed with resin or something like that. I like the handle on your board, it looks like it's a sailma...

Re: New plywood paipo

And here is the little sister of the blue board, the cork board. This one is slightly shorter (belly button height). The blue one is made from a single 1mm plywood plank, this one is made of 2 x 5mm plywood planks glued together. It allowed me to do a 1 cm rocker (still using the iron steam way), an...

Re: New plywood paipo

krusher74 I m sure that paulowina is better, I will probably order a plank this year from the link you gave me on another post. Looking forward to get a wooden board a little less dangerous, and lighter. That said, the lack of buoyancy of plywood is not really a problem to take off (just need to pul...

Re: Need feedbacks on the HPD XL

In a wipe out, is it better to hang on the board until the waves rips it from your hand or is it better to let it go and keep focusing on protecting the head ?

New plywood paipo

Here is a new finless paipo board I made. It is poplar plywood, width 16 in max, length 42 in max. Tiny rocker and concave (using the iron steam way). The leash attachment is a hole on the bottom. Haven't tested it yet, but I made for my son a quite similar board already, which I know works great, w...

Re: Need feedbacks on the HPD XL

krusher74 , thanks for the link, it is indeed quite cheap and I think I could give it a shot.
I like their Preformed Bodyboard blank where the rocker and the concave are already there, I m not a great shaper myself so it would be easier for me.
What kind of leash do you use on your paulownia board ?

Re: Need feedbacks on the HPD XL

Bob, the board would cost me 360 dollars, shipment included. Still cheaper than if I bought a new one, if I take in account the shipment price it would cost from Hawaii. But I noticed that this board doesn't have a leash plug, so I definitely won't by it. Regarding paulownia , is it lighter than bal...

Do you mean it is a little bit like a bodyboard, where you really have to slice the wave's face to turn ?

Also, I'm quite short, 5,5 foot, I am concerned about the board (especially this XL model) being just too big for me.

Re: Need feedbacks on the HPD XL

I thought that a fiberglass board would be less dangerous, seems like I was wrong. In this case I don't have any good reason to buy it. Will be cheaper to keep the plywood board and to buy a Gath helmet and a long surf leash :) On small days it is sometimes so crowded that the helmet would also help...

Re: New H fin board

I have tried out a solid wood board it was fast but a bitch to catch waves. According to my little paipo experience, catching waves with a wood paipo is not more difficult than with a bodyboard, it is just a different way. The wood paipo isn't buoyant enough to carry your body until the ride starts...

Need feedbacks on the HPD XL

I occasionally ride a finless plywood paipo in small waves. It works great, but when waves are bigger, I don't use it since I am concerned about my safety. Plywood is hard and I experienced it twice already. I think the leash may be what caused the board to hit my head, but if I don't use leash then...

Re: Grabbing the rail

Grabbing the outside rail and lifting it, that's what I do on a body board, especially when I feel like I need to bite the face a little bit more. On my plywood paipo, I tend to keep my both hands grabbing the rounded nose. Maybe because I take smaller waves, maybe because the board is less large th...

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. That's curious, but why not, looks like some kind of wooden mini simons.

Is it possible to stand up surfing a paipo ?

Hi, I'm pretty sure I have seen on this website some interviews of guys who used to stand up surf their paipo boards at "the wall" spot. Basically, I was arguing with my son, I say it is possible to stand up, he says it is impossible. What do you think ? What kind of board, what kind of wa...

Re: What's your favorite board for small days ?

Plenty of small days recently, good time to experiment. I took the surf mat most of the time (mainly because I find it less dangerous in summer crowded peaks), it is definitely not easy at all. My son switched his bodyboard to a plywood paipo, so occasionally we switch boards in the middle of the se...

Re: What's your favorite board for small days ?

I spent the weekend at Biarritz, this is where they surf in France in "the endless summer 2" movie. Small conditions, 2-3 feets, but well shaped. I confirm that the surf mat is damn hard to control, I spent an hour just being able to take off. Surf mat is so unknown here that the lifeguard...

Re: which resin for plywood ?

Screen shot 2016-06-10 at 5.04.22 AM.png highly underused element on this site. I don't like the search feature, I like to browse the old posts randomly (which I did plenty of times), a forum is alive, it is not a library.... Having said that, I respect the decision of the majority, if I get no rep...

which resin for plywood ?

Hi, I'd like to apply resin on my plywood paipo, to protect it a little bit more. Do I have to use epoxy resin, or is polyester resin (cheaper) ok ?
Also, is there an advantage to apply clothe with the resin ? Does it affect the board buoyancy ?

Re: What's your favorite board for small days ?

Forget trying to "master" a mat, just enjoy the ride and learn as you go how to get more out of it. Mats aren't like bodyboards, for instance, where you can master the basics pretty quick...but it takes a lot of time and good waves to really excel. With mats there seems to be a fairly end...
