Soft edge

IMG_20191105_125753.jpg I have been experimenting with vinyl wrap on my latest boards , and found with layering clear vinyl makes a perfect trailing edge profile finishing with a razor thin soft edge ,stiffness can be added or subtracted with more or less layers .I have read a lot about vortex gene...

Re: MK3

Learning how to glue and laminate in this cold wet UK weather is an eye opener ,I had huge double garage work shop in South Africa I thought could not live without it but heating it hear would not make sense sheds work fine but you can’t collect junk, a tinkerer is only as good as his pile of junk

Re: MK3

Yes stick, glue, weld stuff together and then rip it apart, there is amazing new adhesives and materials out there, example cars are glued together .

I still feel foils will give better lift to drag numbers than parallel to water flow rails .This is also an experiment with vinyl wrap, I don’t know how long it will stay on. Its 10mm Airex foam core with 20 mm top and bottom polyethylene foam plenty volume, the vinyl wrap is epoxy to the polyethyle...

I have been thinking about a box fitting to run stand-up board fins horizontally on the rails .lots of interesting profiles to test. Not certain they can handle full horizontal side load.

Re: Immigrant board Mk2

The lift to drag ratio of a winglet is better than a sliding rail, so the same lift with less drag. So at the same speed a wing will have less parasitic drag compared to a sliding rail were the low pressure wake is mostly unattached

Re: T-Belly G6

The rail and trailing edge are looking good, I found a wide square trailing edge generally very fast, but dropping down a vertical face they make the center of lift move to the outside tail making the rider move back to control the pitch, dragging more bits in the water.

How about a heavy rider compared to a light rider on the same board on identical waves with the same experience. Who will be faster, or ride the most distance

As a small percentage of the total riding weight the board weight cannot have a significant effect on performance . How can you measure it?

Immigrant board Mk2

file1.jpeg Made with a full width core of two layers of 5mm xps held together with 6oz cloth, plus a full length 5mm thick 20mm wide 3d core foam strip to reduce bending. Covered with 20 mm polyethylene top and bottom, for buoyancy .1130 long, 560mm at midpoint, and 660mm between wing tips. The ide...

Thanks for the fantastic response, only problem it’s getting harder to decide .Back zip must be the way for me, my arms don’t rotate well. I presume a 5/4 for north east of the UK .

Re: New summer Groveler

I think a lot of people don’t see the overall picture. The overall weight has to include the rider. The board weight as a percentage of the total riding package can’t be that significant, except when doing unloaded airs, where getting it back under the rider is important. I think science says more w...

Re: The Immigrint board

Thanks for the advice. I was surprised at how few beginners try prone boards. In Newque, during the week I was there, I saw maybe 5 body boards compared to hundreds of stand ups. It’s surly easier to get into good waves sooner riding prone? Wetsuits, what’s the vote on rear zip or front pull over. I...
