Re: T-Belly Generation 2
True Ames has gone to the Resin Transfer Method (RTM) for producing most of their shortboard fins and the Bonzer center-fin. RTM fins feature a honeycomb foam-and-fiberglass core ("Hexcore"), with fiberglass overlay to achieve a fin with a flex pattern similar to solid glass, but nearly 50...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2
I've been messing around with fins on the G2 and here's a couple of "trials". On the first I used longboard side bites from True Ames. For placement, I put the 3.7"Dx3.5"B in the front position and the 3.25"Dx3.25"B in the rear. Result: speed equal to bonzer side runner...

Re: Riding position
This was my response to Krusher and rod...echos what you said above... I designed the T-Belly to be ridden from a position behind the center. To understand this, you have to understand my design process. My designs are purposeful, and by that I mean each design element has a purpose. Design elements...

Re: T-Belly G3
When the board is planing, pressure is created the area in the rear third of the bottom. The concave, which is not closed but open, allows water to freely escape out the back, reducing this pressure and decreasing the drag associated with it. Water is very "sticky". It wants to cling to su...

T-Belly G3
This is actually the second G3, but its more representative of the typical shape. The intended rider is 5'10" 170# lifetime surfer from Australia. His local break is occasionally OH to 2xOH, with rare 3xOH days. After a great deal of discussion, we selected the following dimensions: 44" x ...

WHAT! No fins?
Nicely done! I really like the use of fabric on the deck.

Re: Dr. Robert's Sefiroth Bonzer Paipo
Very interesting! I was just thinking about my next paipo experiment, and was considering a shrunk-down (4-6 to 5-0) version of my mini-Simmons shape. For me, the idea would be to reduce drag as much as possible in the shortest length possible. Getting the rider's legs out of the water should really...

...yes, and rail thickness, crown vs flat deck, so many variables, and so many variables we can't even measure. Trying to make "good" better is often not as easy as it sounds....
BTW, I spend much more time talking design when there's no waves to ride.

Re: T-Belly Generation 2
By my reckoning, a 50" x 20" x 2" Austin shape is about 23L (+/-.5L if I got the rail shape wrong). Lacking the tool to determine the exact surface area of both, my guess would be that, despite the similarity in volume, the Austin plan shape has a little more planing area than the 44&...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2
I'm not concerned about the "ride" of the G3 in large waves per se. I'm more concerned about having enough paddling speed to catch a larger, faster wave without the late entry, free-fall drop. I believe that improving paddling speed is done first through increasing planing surface. Planing...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2
After spending a few sessions in chest-high, clean beach break conditions on the last of the G2 series, I wanted to report my findings. One goal of this project was to test the limits of volume for the G2 design. I reduced volume from 21L to 20L on the red G2. A liter of eps foam is significant in a...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2
I prefer a centrally located leash plug myself. The dual leash plugs were added to demonstrate the ability to install a handle anchors and/or ambidextrous leash plug location for those preferring right or left-hand location. In the end, the customer can decide where to locate the plugs. I can see wh...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2
With the TBG3 already in the works, here's the last 43" EPS/epoxy TBG2. As mentioned above, this shape is thinner, both at the center (2") and at the rail (2-1/4"), than previous G2s (Vol=21.5L). I also went much lighter with the glassing schedule, using 4oz E-cloth for the bottom and...

Re: Question RE: Painting EPS blanks
***Always try your finish on a sample before using it on your work. Especially, if you don't have any experience with the product.*** Never spray raw eps blank with common spray-can paint. The spray-can paint contains acetone, which dissolves eps foam. Spray-can paint contain solvents and propellant...
