Re: End of an Era

I recall a time a half-century ago when The Bigs ruled everything in surfboards. They went down hard. The world around us has barely started to change. I read that the sporting industries can't keep up with demand in North American Summer this year, but the economy has been riding on hope. Other tha...

Re: End of an Era

I don't know how I missed this one - so sorry to hear that. These are some times we're living in. Lots of changes. Maybe somebody else will pick it up. Nobody up in Santa Barbara?

Best wishes, regardless.

Take it where you get it...Proneman?

So last week or late the week before, had Los Angeles County TV news on because they were going to Malibu...and one of their random shots caught this ride. Proneman? El Paipo Grande?

The Wall Paipo?

I came across this last week. Big a screen as you can...first ride. Looks like wood paipo to me, ridden kind of "old school" paipo style (sliding off inside rail there at the end).

RE bodyboarding clip...yep, you're all right, it sucked. If we're lucky everybody who sees that will keep BASE jumping or whatever. Paipo movie though...I'd still say go for it. This bodyboarding thing wasn't even done by a core bodyboarder. Thanks Bob for "illuminating" me...time for me t...

Re: fish the movie

totally missed that link...I'm suffering from severe saltwater withdrawl...must be affecting what's left of my brain.

I guess now I'll have to watch it and get totally horrified with the rest of you. This does explain why I couldn't understand the upset with the Fish movie...

Re: fish the movie

Didn't mean to take things off track.

There have been some good surf-related movies/vids. However, there's a reason a lot of people just call it "surf porn". I tend to favor things with some thought and enthusiasm over raw noise and action.

Re: fish the movie

Hydrodynamica did end up with a great museum showing and accompanying book. Seriously? Fat lot of good that did for the surfing world. Never heard a word about any of it. For all the hipster hype they put out... Ah well. Piss on it. Did anybody other than me see that fantastic documentary Greg Sche...

Re: fish the movie

Jeez guys...I watched this back when it was posted and thought it was fine. Maybe there was a couple of historical errors? Can't quite remember a week or so on. I totally enjoyed seeing footage of the 1972 World Contest, which I attended the final 2 days of. I remember the boards, the people, seeing...

Re: And this too shall pass...but not soon enough

Since in all likelihood we won't be released to go back to the beach until late May at the earliest, current operating strategy is to keep my eye on wetsuit sales as Spring passes into Summer. Pick off a 4/3 on sale for next Fall. I'm an optimist. I think maybe all surfers are, right? We'd go mad if...

And this too shall pass...but not soon enough

Last weekend was the 50th anniversary of my first time out on a surfboard. Small potatoes in the modern world, but a big thing for me, and the times that once were. I had intended to dust off the longboard and work through the rust and go to the same break and ride 2 or 3 waves, hopefully up on my f...

I've played around with these sized boards too...lots of fun! Can be a bit hard on the shoulders and upper arms after a while. They function like the proverbial McDonald's trays. Don't need flex, don't need rocker. Nice to not have a squared off nose thickness though, I got by just sanding a little ...

and there will need to be some waves to ride, too...where are the waves? It's nearly mid-October in our part of Southern California, and it feels like there will never be waves again. I have to say, the past 4-5 months are close to breaking my stoke. Alas... I'm going to be landlocked elsewhere for...

I'm interested in hearing informed response as well. Nobody I know goes to Baja any more, but that may have to do with distance. The general tourist info downplays or ignores the rampant crime along the border and Cabo. I occasionally come across accurate reports about very nasty situations happenin...

Re: The Immigrint board

Modern times and social media have killed of prone riding for all but those interested in traveling the road less traveled. In the general media, bodyboarding is never portrayed as anything other than something you use without fins to jump from the sand onto white water and, "if you're a real ...

Let's face it...that issue is everywhere in the known surf world. If anybody figures out the solution, or a good work-around, please post.

Board looks interesting...

Looks like a great way to shred the skin of your shinny-shin-shins... While it's great to look at, mystifying to me how it actually works and works so well from what the vid shows (mostly because I just don't care), I'd hate to be "sharing" a peak with somebody on one. If somebody is looki...

Re: River surfing:Setting the record straight.

I know you are interested in stationary river surfing - but I also know people surfed river tidal bore waves in the 1960's. The first I read of it was Rod Sumpter on the Severn River in the UK in maybe 1968, Surfer Magazine article. They have one in Atlantic Canada too. Possible people in those area...

Re: River surfing:Setting the record straight.

I don't have first-hand knowledge, just memory from media, but maybe it would be of help. There was a trip of bodyboarders to I think the Snake River to ride river waves. I would assume locals had already done this, certainly kayakers. If memory serves Ben Severson was one of the Bodyboarders. Not s...
