Re: Chest Guard/Rash Guard

Have you tried just puling elbows in, tight against ribs, and taking most of those "hits" on your forearms instead of your ribs? Has helped me a lot but I am not that aggressive a rider and have not logged nearly as many wave hours as you likely have...

Re: simmons type stand up for belly riding?

Never have done. But ponder the volume which is for arm paddling only followed by standing and skimming across relatively flat waves. I'd give one a go if nothing else was available but seems like it would be heck of a lot of board to wrestle.

Re: Swim fins and the winter.

The only little inconvenience that remains is that the filpper being bigger than my natural size, it is also harder to paddle (more surface), but this is something I ll get used to I guess. Yes, just a bit more muscle development from using them and end result will be greater thrust/speed. I go luc...

Re: Swim fins and the winter.

I lived in NorCal for some years and water temps only down to 8 or 9C at lowest. Always used Viper-7's w/ I think 5 ml booties. They fit inside just fine though I have small feet (size 7 US) and in warmer water I had to still wear the booties which was fine with me; Not bothered by them at all even ...

Re: Need feedbacks on the HPD XL

Don't these boards behave a lot like plywood when you lose them in that they rarely if ever get carried very far by the wave, popping back up right near you?

Re: New plywood paipo

I am hesitating on applying varnish or not, but I am afraid it makes the cork kind of crispy If you have a small piece of scrap to test on, try coat of thinned varnish, very firmly squeegeed in. Might not be too bad and surface I would think will soften back up with just a little use or rubbing, le...

Re: Need feedbacks on the HPD XL

The actual HPD company has newer model that is not guitar pick shaped. Having ridden a guitar pick plywood board a few times, I do not really like the outline though to be fair, it could have been just that the board overall was much too big for me. Anyway, check it out Hawaiian Paipo Designa~PAIPO ...

Rod, I don't want to put words in someone else's mouth but I think he meant to compare all 3 of your diagrams as "normal rail" to this i.e. "chine rail"

Re: The latest melaleuca missile # 5

Never rode it in big, powerful waves so do not know about ultimate strength, but I have installed old school FU long box in board that was thin enough that the tail end of the box was through on the deck and needed to be ground down and glassed over. Worked find as hard as I worked it anyway.

Re: The latest melaleuca missile # 5

I did wonder how twins would interact with the wings - might go well or work against each other. Like many of our boards - its a bit of an experiment. Bob Yes, I think fin placement w/ twins could be a very finicky deal vs the wings. If done just right the wings could act as canards or similar. May...

That is beautiful with a whole lot going on in the shape! To me, looks like perfect thickness and rail thickness as well; I tend to like thin.

Re: The latest melaleuca missile # 5

That is a fine looking board! I'd be very curious how it would ride with small keels (either traditional 2 or more a "speed dialer" quad type set up) instead of as a single fin.

Re: Uh-oh Kelly Slater better look out--warm water too!

Made the chorus of this old Mary Hopkin song pop back into my head Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la, Those were the days, oh y...

Re: Uh-oh Kelly Slater better look out--warm water too!

Can't remember who or when but old surf mag interview w/ well known surfer from 40's and 50's, now quite old and living on sail boat in Sea of Cortez. He said (approximate quote), "I feel very blessed to have lived when I did and will feel very fortunate to die when I do." As the saying go...
