Hi Friends,
I'm saddened to let you know that Buzzy Kneubuhl has passed away..he was doing one of the many favorite things he loved to do in the ocean..riding the "down winders" from Hookipa to Kahalui Harbor on Maui last Wednesday in his one man canoe (along with another canoe'r), ran into some trouble , and apparently suffered a heart attack.
You may know him from the interview he did with Bob last year, if not, please check it out.. it's a stoker..he was a remarkable human being, a true surfer, and as close to what has been described as a "paipo water brother" as you could ever be lucky, or privleged, enough to meet.
He coined the term "paipo possessed' as we explored our paipo obsession together.
When I got the news this morning, I said well, whatever happens, I'm going out to catch one for Buzzy.
It was overhead, foggy, and totally screwed up surf.
Went out and got my ass kicked.
Good enough.
During your next go out, ride one for Brother Buzzy.
Life is short..paipo on!
Peace, Aloha, and Mahalo.

Auwe!
Many of us are at that age when we are losing our friends faster then making them.
It's certainly a blessing to go out doing what you love. We should all be so lucky.
Aloha Menemene, family, friends and loved ones.
Paipo surfer in repose,
Nose on the nose,
No grunting he-man pose.
See how fast he goes!
What is it he knows?

I particularly enjoyed the experience of sharing some of Buzzy's story. He was at pains to acknowledge his peers and his roots. I suspect he also posted a few times on the forum but was very low key. A sad time for those who knew him.

An email I received today:

Just a great opportunity to reminisce. My family also operated out of Hale AuAu. I was never nearly as good, connected, or inspired as Buzzy was at surfing. But he was a great person and I'm so glad that he was responsible from the grave for reminding me of such good times and good people. From the balsa era to the foam boards ("OH, DON'T WORRY, THEY'LL COME DOWN IN PRICE") -- what amazing times with amazing riders. All were real heros.
