The Crabb Belly Board

#1

Unread post by Poobah »

Patented by Robert Crabb back in the heyday of the Paipo Nui. Sort of like an HPD with rail fins. Grumpy...have you ever seen one of these at the foundation? Anyone else?

Poobah,

Have a look at Larry Goddard's paipo interview - http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/Lar ... dard.shtml

Search for Crabb or scroll down to the Appendix.

In addition to some text there is a drawing of the 'The skegless plywood "Ventral Vindicator" paipo board
made by Bob Crabb in 1965. Rode up to 12 ft waves in winter surf (Redondo Breakwater, Rincon Point).'

The patent references to earlier designs may be interesting. I have previously searched for the term 'ventral vindicator' and don't recall hits - might be worth trying again.

Isn't this similar to the boards that Stan Osserman makes?

We could ask Stan what he thinks.

On another note, one of the museums near Manhattan Beach may know of Crabb.

I've handled all the boards in SHF collection and there's none like this one; but it sure looks like Osserman had seen one.
Paipo surfer in repose,
Nose on the nose,
No grunting he-man pose.
See how fast he goes!
What is it he knows?
