Re: Old Santa Cruz bellyboard
That is a very unique shape.
Paipo surfer in repose,
Nose on the nose,
No grunting he-man pose.
See how fast he goes!
What is it he knows?

We need to get our Santa Cruz investigatory team out there. Those old 8 mm film strips would be interesting. Get on it, Kim Green!!

Re: Old Santa Cruz bellyboard
Interesting...sort of a cross between an ironing board and a casket template. Perhaps the nose end of a broken pintail surfboard?
In my old photo files, Swaylocker Steiny from Santa Cruz had a plywood bellyboard with penguin decals. The ice house was also the possible source of the decals. I recall seeing a photo of a Santa Cruz kookbox with a similar decal, but I can't find that photo.

Re: Old Santa Cruz bellyboard
So... what was the influence behind that style of board shape? An ironing board or a casket lid? Although the Santa Cruz board is literally a re-purposed ironing board, there are several boards in that style being surfed in that 1947 California video I posted that look like they're in the 8 - 12 ft range. They all look purpose built, not something recycled. The top 3/4 of the ironing board shape actually works pretty well as a ply paipo. I made a board that started like that, but I ended up rounding off the mid points.
