First ever
Merry Christmas to all paipo riders out there.
Just finished glassing my first ever attempt at making a board.
Really enjoyed the process but found the glassing stressful.
I have been checking this forum for a couple of years and have gained some great ideas.
Thanks to all that has shared.
I have been riding Dick Ash boards now for a couple of years love the way they go lots of flex but weren't as durable as I would like.
I got a local board builder to make me a board which was a disaster far to much volume it was like a cork really hard to duck dive.
After thinking and designing in my mind I decided to have a go.
Found some foam insulation foam at a hardware shop which was 1200 x 600 x 30 on special for $12.
Worked out a shape cut it out shaped the rails and nose. I did not have much to play with for nose rocker but got a bit out of it.
The board is 45x19 approx 1inch thick but less in parts as I have dished out the deck.
I used 1 layer 6oz on the bottom and 2x6oz on the deck and used epoxy.
That's about as technical I can get.
It's been a journey looking forward to paddling out.

Re: First ever
Thanks Bob I surf Angourie both sides depending on wind and crowds but there are plenty of other set ups close by.
I am going to go finless to see how it goes. I have a pair of fins from another board that I plan to shape down to knubster keel style which will give me a bit of hold on the inside section at the point.

Re: First ever
Looks like fun. A guy at one of my surf spots made a prone board out that kind of foam. He seemed to have a good time.

Re: First ever
congratulations on a first board build!
Does it turn at all with that very straight rail, or track in a straight line?

Re: First ever
Got a go out at back point today small 1metre but real happy with the new board.
I was able to bottom turn and get the rail set with ease.
Happy with that I ventured to the right hand point which was breaking a bit more solid and got one ball tearer of a wave.
Paddled back out took off on a peaky insider made the drop and got a speedy run along the face then it closed in front of me not being tethered lost the board which was heading to life and death luckily it didn't end on the rocks so a leg rope plug is being fitted before next go out.
Totally rapt in my homemade piapo.

L,
Good to hear it went well in some juice. Do you have any more photos?

L,
Doesn't look like a lot of nose lift. Does it flex?
At Easter, I'll be less than an hour north. I'm staying for a week and had discussed with Ian meeting up and surfing around MW.
