My Jalama partner in crime bailed this morning with an upset stomach....I think it was just as well as I suspect things up there in the wilderness were likely wonky. Was in the water instead at Hammonds in SB at 6:30 to avoid the crowd. I'll give it a "B-" I am watching it right now as the tide is starting to drop and there are occasional 4-5 foot sets coming through. Rod....I would think C St could be happening if you can stomach the crowd. I checked in with Nomas earlier in the week and he said he was watching the reports....anticipating that we might all be coming back down his way to Ventura in which case he would meet us there. Whoa....as I write this a solid head high set just came through. Skiff may yet earn the "Genius" title for this gathering. Come on El Cap.

Crowds and I don't mix very well. I mix even worse with them (is that some sort of Yogi'ism?). Avoiding crowds so much the past few years makes it rather difficult to make-do in them. The one thing "C" St. might have going for it are the multitude of takeoff spots... but, shudder, the drop-ins appear to be endless.

Ha....welcome to SoCal on a three day week-end....add hot and sunny weather and a swell.....what you gonna do. It is HOT....setting up camp tomorrow before the sun sets will be a sweat fest. The ticket for Monday is going to be in the water EARLY EARLY....there is enough light by 6:30.

Why can't it be rainy like the high Arizona desert and southern Utah canyons were on the drive west??

Allright you Early Birds, RUB IT IN HARD! The Malibu Cam is going loony and often some aspects of a south can sneak in there and help the overall picture out. I'm waiting for the first 'real time' IPhone photo to be posted, either from a late afternoon or very early morning low tide session. Let us know how things are shaping up.

James reports via text foto some swell at Capt. Point albeit "slow." He is headed for a night in Ventura. Plan on meeting him sometime in the morning, at least early enough to beat the greater LA metro traffic, haha.

My new "genius" plan....low tide El Cap is 4PM Sunday. So arrive Ocean Mesa 3:00PMish.....and assuming Skiff's Surf Gods smile on us...walk down for a late afternoon go out on the incoming tide. Return to Ocean Mesa to set up camp in a more temperate clime at 6:30 sunset. Monday morning make the flashlight walk in and launch 6:30 as the beautiful dawn greets the 7AM sunrise. We should miss some of the Holiday crowd. I'm getting excited...minimal or maximal surf be damned.

I am keeping my food preparation simple this trip.. Peanut Butter sandwich, tuna fish sandwich, granola bars and beer. Also an aging lime that mixes well. Always game for some good Mexican food.

It's 5:09pm on Sunday evening, and my guess is that every paipo guy that is 'there'..............is out in the water right now?! Low tideeeeeeeee, yessir. I'm getting reports from down in that area that "...there's plenty of swell in the area...........lots of west in this swell............and XYZ Spot was going off this afternoon...."

I think this just might work out. I'm arriving approximately 1pm tomorrow, Monday, and I'll be hoofing it over to the point at 3pm if not a bit before. See everyone there.

I'm not going to make it this time...life got complicated in and from unexpected directions. Weather is epic in SoCal though. Hope everybody has a great time.

Quick report... I am taking a quick break from LA traffic... when it eases I point the camper minivan Eastward towards home.

Good 'lil gathering the benefits which included more one-on-one getting to know people and a less crowded line-up (HA HA, I have not been in such crowded conditions in a couple of years as it was!). Surfed three spots in small conditions: Hobos, Cap and a place that is public but not to be mentioned, but is was south of our site and before Ventura (and it was not Rincan, as I believe it pronounced in SoCal locales).

Never heard from the "punk" who started this thread, Nomas Tomas (well, the Spanish translation of "no mas" is "no more"). Sorry he wasn't able to join us in the water or at the campsite for some fireside chatter. I did jump on one of his boards, the Gen4 belonging to Steve B. Didn't get to ride anyways as it was uber crowded at a small Cap which meant riding the rock line, but I did get a good "feel" for the board and would welcome a chance to ride one when conditions are more consistent.

SteveB was a wonderful Santa Barbara/Ventura area host, sorry he missed night two, but REALITY issues also bit him. Thanks to him for catching us as we approached the "secret spot" while driving south to Ventura. The Man From the North was also wonderful company, as we shared rides and foods and great talk. Pez is also a great guy...plus has some eastern roots... score!

Oh, we did meet another Venturan as he and Pez were exiting the water at Hobos. More time, next time. And Skiff joined us at the campground late yesterday and reportedly has photos from his Cap session.

Never enough time but there is always mañana.

Sorry I missed the trip. With yellow fin tuna counts up, and a new moon, I opted for an overnight fishing trip that left Sun night and returned Mon night. Fishing was terrible, but I got some good, uncrowded 4' waves at C St yesterday on the back end of that swell. Glad you guys had fun.
