Re: Duckfeet/DaFin comparison (land-based early impressions)
Have you tried Duckfeet? I had a pair of Voits back in high school but they hurt my bare feet so I switched to green Churchill's for the comfort. Even those wore holes all the way through my skin after a long day in the water. I still have the scars. Were you riding a paipo board before the HPD? Bo...

Re: Duckfeet/DaFin comparison (land-based early impressions)
After moving to Oregon 27 years ago I switched to the largest foot size UDT's with 2mm booties for my size 13 feet. The booty soles can get shredded after one walk on a rock bottom but nothing can match the power of full size UDTs. With a strong kick from the hips they can handle getting into big su...

Re: Small day at Lacanau
I love the way traditional thin finless paipos can get out in front of the whitewater and get around collapsed sections and are able to be in position to get onto the face when a wave reforms in the shore break.

Fish: The Surfboard Documentary
This flick is up on Amazon and is a pretty cool account of how the shape evolved from bodysurfing, paipo, and knee riding as very much an alternative wave riding vehicle.

Sounds great! Reps to you for competing and completing. The rides I saw in the second heat were long, angling bodysurf style rides with the occasional bodysurf style spinner thrown in.

A leaky hooded 5/4 and full rash guard. The water was really cold - mid 40's. Air on the beach was close to 60 in the sun though. Lots of ice and snow patches in the forest shade.Ted wrote:Looks like fun. How much rubber you wearing?

Re: Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Contest
"I do have a problem with juvenile language." Tough titties. The board that Paul calls the HPD spoon was designed for a skeg. That's not what he told me. He says it's a Monster Board and that you insisted he put a fin on it. I don't have a problem with any kind of paipo or belly board I w...

Re: Any Paipo Riders on Kauai?
I like Left Lefts on a South swell. Takes you right into the middle of the cove for a free ride in the rip straight back out to the lineup. Plus you don't have to contend with the crowded zoo at Brenneke's. In the winter the beach at Hanalei Bay is huge and lots of vacant sandbar peaks are available.

Haha! No skegs allowed in the Paipo contest for all you belly-boarding fags. I guess you'll all have to learn how to swim...

Re: An unusual (?) surf injury
As I (on my back, pinned to the reef) held onto the board with hands on the rails in usual duck dive position, the turbulence violently flailed the board towards me and sprained my left thumb. Next time I'm letting the board go. It seems like the thinness of the rail (compared to the Austin) encour...

Re: Fin recommendations
My personal preference would probably be a pair of 3-inchers. Worth trying out to feel the effect - hopefully you can borrow a pair of loaners -- fins are too damn expensive to buy every type you want to try. Hah! That board looks just like a longer version of "Lollypop" a Ron Romanosky b...
Re: Oahu
PaipoJim, what kind of bellyboard were you riding back then? That was certainly pre-HPD days. 36" Freeline Design round tail tri fin, almost a round pin but a little bit wider. It was sitting in the front window of Jon Mel's shop on 41st Street in Sanata Cruz and with just one look I knew I ha...
