Re: Lindsay Lord Hybrid

Greenough's Velo is a "displacement hull" design. Lord worked with "planing hulls", so his theory on AR would not apply to the Velo.

Re: Lindsay Lord Hybrid

Not exactly well-groomed...That wave looks like a wave I surfed in Nica back in 2006. Deep water reef way off shore. I was surfing a HP LB back then and we surfed off a panga, so easy paddle over to the peak.. Howling offshores made it really hard to get in. It would have been a pretty wild ride on ...

Re: Lindsay Lord Hybrid

I'll add another grain of salt to what Rod has aptly pointed out... all of Lord's experiments were conducted by pulling what amounted to a sled across flat water. The only time my G5 prone board is on "flat" water is when I'm paddling, and then I never paddle at planing speed. So, while I ...

Re: TBXL

Still thinking "de-tuned" is the way to go. No lifting concaves, no hard edges. I would also consider going to a displacement-hull bottom contour, and an outline with the W"P at center or an inch forward of center. Move max thickness up a tad to get the tail to sink a little bit more,...

Re: TBXL

but the nose of the paipo practically never touches the water, so putting a boat nose is not a good solution. I missed this post when it was published 5 yrs ago, and just happened upon it today. I totally agree with this assessment, and have for some time. Since speed and planing ares generate lift...

Re: Foto of 5 newly built boards here in Oaxaca (Mex)

Man, I've always wanted to build a wooden version of my T-Bellys. I considered the chambered approach, but didn't/don't have access to a band saw. I've collaborated several times with a local Intermediate school shop teacher who had his woodshop students building HWS mini-Simmons. I would use Aku to...

Re: Dorsal Swim Fins

Hey, Nels...my street shoe size is 10 wide. I have the Dorsal Phantom in the Ex Large (12-13) size and I wear Patagonia 2mil booties with them. (https://www.patagonia.com/product/r2-yulex-hybrid-surf-booties/89433.html?dwvar_89433_color=BLK&cgid=mens-wetsuits-accessories) They are closer to sock...

Re: Dorsal Swim Fins

Keep in mind that My Phantoms are XLg (12-13) at 825g and my MSVipers are only Lg (9-10) at 610g. I would image that the size Lg Phantoms are closer to 650g. My V7 XLg were HUGE! and seemed much heavier the my XLg Phantoms. Yucca has good marketing and probably a pretty good fin, but their OC prices...

Re: Dorsal Swim Fins

Weight is for a single fin. I only use perceived surface speed and accelleration to judge thrust. Perceived fin weight or stiffness or lack thereof have no bearing on thrust in my mind. I can "feel" myself going through the water and accellerating faster with the Dorsals. I spend a lot of ...

Re: Dorsal Swim Fins

Dorsal Phantom Overal Length = 16.75"/426mm Weight = 1.8lb/817g The Dorsal heel strap has an even thickness taper from foot pocket (thick) to heel (thin) making it maybe twice as flexible and stretchy as the Duckfeet. DF heel straps have a consistent thickness from foot pocket to heel and are q...

Here are the fins currently in my possession, Left-to-Right: MS Viper Lg 9-10 (asymmetric BTW), Dorsal X-Lg 11-13, Original Voit Duckfeet Lg 9-10 (20-30 yr old), newer Voit Duckfeet Lg 9-10. Completely surprised to see the length difference between the Size Lg DF and the Size XLg Dorsal. Blade width...

Dorsal Swim Fins

Like most of you, I've been on an almost neverending search for thr "right" swim fin. Back in the late-60s I used a pair fo Voit Scuba Dive fins, the kind with the full foot pocket, to body surf at the Huntington Beach Pier. In those days, the "black ball" came out at 11a in the ...

Its been a couple of years since this thread was started...any new reviews of the Yucca Standard Flex? DuckFeet have been my goto fins for nearly 40yr, due to their stiffness and resulting thrust. But, there has always been a certain amount of pain that goes with wearing them. Primarily that has bee...

Re: Monolith 2001: XLPE

Very interesting experimentation...the foam you're working with is difficult to shape, not just because of the flex but also the cell structure. With polyurethane foam, a chemical reactions creates the foam in an enclosed space (mold) and the cells share cell walls, so its more or less a single, sol...

Actually, very similar to the planing hulls Lindsay Lord used for his research, including the exit concave to reduce pressure/drag in the rear third of the bottom.

Re: First Build

Nicely done...very traditional. You gotta use the tools that work. Shouldn't have any trouble with speed, with flat rocker and parallel rails. Might be a little stiff when turning. You'll need to learn to heavily weigh the tail when turning to bring that rail-line up and out of the water. Like ridin...

Re: First Build

My prone boards weigh about 2.5kg, so even a 5kg prone board seems too heavy. Without getting into the whole buoyancy vs. mass thing, I've found that better buoyancy = better performance. But, you gotta use the materials available I guess. I would think 1/2" or 5/8" marine plywood would be...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

I agree with #29. The TA Bonzer has 19deg cant built in to the base. Cant increases lift but decreases hold. Typical Bonzer set up has a 6.5” center fin to counter drift. Your challenge will be installing removable fin boxes in such a thin hull. Removable because knocking off and re-installing glass...
