Re: Building my first Paipo

Hi Matt, Good to hear of another paipo rider on Cape Cod. Maybe we can meet up next summer. There are one or two older regulars that I've found riding either Coast Guard or Nauset Light beaches--though they're not super sociable. They also insist that they're on alaias and look at me strangely when ...

Board thickness and tail block questions...

Hi All, I dove into my first paipo making project this past fall--which is also my first serious woodworking project, outside of making skateboard ramps as a kid. It's looking pretty good, but I have a few things I want to check in on. First is the overall board thickness. I've butt joined 5 pieces ...

Re: First Paipo Build- Tips?

Good to know. Thanks! Unfortunately, my lumber is a few hairs off from being perfectly straight-edged. My friend may have a jointer I can use. Otherwise, I'm going to get a lot more familiar with my planer very soon. (I've been told I need to properly tune it up before I use it for a real job--other...

Re: First Paipo Build- Tips?

Well, I was planning on using T800 epoxy, though I also have Gorilla Glue and Tightbond III. I was leaning toward epoxy so I could just use oil on the board afterward.

Re: First Paipo Build- Tips?

So, just spoke with a woodworker friend of mine who definitely had his own ideas as to how this should be built. Should I spring my joints?

Re: Merchant's Row Paipo

(42X 22 X 3/4) so, definitely more of a bodyboard style. The fins and stringers are actually one piece. The whole thing has an epoxy coating. Yes, definitely curious to see if it rides as good as it looks.

Re: Merchant's Row Paipo

Hee, hee. Yeah, that was part of the spending spree. All the woodworking supplies just pushed it over the edge. Now I've got to go sell some gear! Anyone want a really nice kneeboard?

Merchant's Row Paipo

As I make my own first board, I had to pick up something to ride in the meantime ;) Luckily, a local craftsman was offering his first, prototype paipo for sale. Paulownia, mahogany and walnut (42X22X3/4). Ooo, getting very excited. http://cache1.bigcartel.com/product_images/60212103/Paipo_Higgins1.j...

Re: Balsa Twin Fin

Sweet. The contours on the deck are beautifully done. As for the logo--it's killing me. I've definitely seen it before. Not the Seabees, but I'm thinking Navy? I remember a cigar in its mouth.

Re: First Paipo Build- Tips?

Perfect. I just laid out the boards tonight---it's a beautiful combo. Uncle Grumpy, I saw you have symbols/graphics on some of your boards (like that narrow 5'2"). What technique do you use, if you don't mind me asking?

Re: First Paipo Build- Tips?

Okay, I loaded up on lumber to play with. Looks like it will either be: 1.) a wide Doug Fir center board surrounded by red cedar (with some nice color variations), or 2.) a 3.5" mahogany stringer surrounded by cedar. I've read that Doug Fir has good flex strength, but I'm guessing I'd have to e...

Re: First Paipo Build- Tips?

Good stuff. Thanks! Looks like I have some decisions to make regarding glue or epoxy as well as wood selection. Unfortunately, my main piece of basswood just arrived and it has a bow to it as well as unfinished edges--my workload just increased if I still want to use it. I'm surprised that with the ...

First Paipo Build- Tips?

Hey Everyone, I'm about to dive in and build my first paipo! :D (It will also be my first serious woodworking project since building skateboard ramps as a kid.) My plans are for a simple, vertically laminated, flat bottomed board (45"x17"x1/2") of basswood, cedar and local tulip popla...
