Re: New project... this time a Paipo

That style of fin could be ok, especially if you are riding into the shallows. Iv'e surfed around Peniche - what are the waves like down your way? With some luck they look like this... but ii's a beachbreak so it changes almost everyday. During the winter this beach can produce some really big wave...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

Sorry, maybe I was not clear. I'm not going to use FCS fins, nor I will use fin boxes. I'm considerind something with fhis aproximate shape, like my old Atunas used to have, with a very low aspect ratio. Usually I surf in a beach break with very irregular conditions, that breaks very near the shore,...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

To avoid too much drag, too much stability and reduce the possibility of the fins to break I'm considering something like the the FCS B5 Bonzer

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

Thanks, lots of good information to process!! I was thinking about asymmetrical fins mainly for simplicity, because I would tape them together and shape like a symmetrical, later separating them and by this way ensure they would be the same size, shape, etc (just me been lazy). From what you've said...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

Thanks for the feedback! My initial plan was to get fins. First I thought about using 4 little fins, with 2 symmetrical on the center and 2 asymmetrical on the outer edges. Now I'm considering only 2 larger asymmetrical fins without canter or convergence. In the meanwhile I've added an hand grab on ...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

Hello Just to give you a quick update, work has been slow but steady. So far I've cut the tail to a crescent shape, glassed and polished the bottom and glued the cork deck. Unfortunatelly the cork gluing didn't worked very well, it fell short, it has some pockets without glue, and I don't think it w...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

The idea is to make a more traditional kind of paipo, the cork will be there only to provide some comfort and grip and thus avoid wax. I think this is a good way to start in the paipism, by making it very different from a traditional bodyboard. I've been bodyboarding for the last 30 years so I don't...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

Well... work and the pandemic are not cooperating with me so I'm still trying to find time and oportunity to source materials. But in the meanwhile I've bought a cheap plywood skimboard, polyester resin, glassfibre and a sheet of cork, all for 35€, and started a stopgap paipo project just to keep bu...

Thanks... I'm well aware of the addictive properties of any kind of "toy" building / assembly... I'm now in my second longboard skate, my third handplane, my third bicycle build, etc...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

Why dont you try core foam used in boat building 5,10,20mm thickness ,easy to set channels ,rockers with heat or bending with batons and weights gets fantastic resin penetration When I was in the experimental aircraft building business we used to have AIREX PVC foam, which had good stiffness, low d...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

Great classic bodyboard collection! The BZ and Turbo III look in excellent condition, and the Atunas is pretty rare. I still have another Atunas, also a board that gave me a lot of fun, but also lost some of its stiffness. The Turbo III is in great condition and it's still my favorite board, stiff ...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

What about the glue?
I was thinking about using epoxy resin, but I'm not sure about its compatibility with EPS. I know that epoxy works fine with styrofoam (XPS), so I'm basically assuming it should work too with EPS.
I was also trying to avoid having to use a vacuum bag.

New project... this time a Paipo

Hello I’m considering building a board like a paipo, but inspired on my first bodyboard’s shape, being the orange in the right side of the picture. The board is a Atunas, unknown model, bought in 1991. The board has no slick, is badly wrinkled and lost a lot of its integrity. Nevertheless, this boar...

Re: Travel Board

Finally done and ready for sea trials! Used a kitchen cutting board, a strap from an old cooler bag, an old swim fins leash with paracord, scrap aluminium and some nuts and bolts. Forming the concave bottom wigh the heat gun was easy, but removing the scratches from the bottom required some sanding ...

Re: Travel Board

Well, I had to try my idea and yesterday decided to transform an old kitchen cutting board into a handboard.

Cutting the board was easy and I used a piece of scrap to test bending and finishing with a heat gun... more will follow!

Re: Travel Board

Taking on an idea given previously, why don´t you try making a handboard from a nylon or kitchen cutting board? Check this for reference: https://ahuasurf.com/collections/featured/products/ahua-nano-handboard https://ahuasurf.com/collections/featured/products/reboard-blue It would be small and light...

Greetings from Portugal

Hello fellow wave riders! I'm Vitor, a 41 years old guy from Portugal. I've been riding waves since a kid and started bodyboarding at the age of 11 with a "slickless" Atunas bodyboard. I still surf with my good old Mike Stewart Turbo III whenever may parenting, familiar and professional ac...
