Re: THE PHAETON F-44 BARRELHAWK
Those groin bumps must be a lot softer than they appear and maybe a lot shorter than they appear. I would not want to wipe-out tangled with all that fin but to each our own. The gentleman has found something that works well for him, apparently sells a few and is staying wet in his later-in-life days...

Re: THE PHAETON F-44 BARRELHAWK
I've kind of wondered about those groin bumps. The shaper has been selling these paipo-style Greenough spoon boards for awhile, hence the weight from all the glass & resin. I think the bumps are for hand holds during wave catching. They the rider scoots up and holds onto the nose rail handles. A...

Re: French paipo
I have a very low rocker fibgreglass board. As soon as a wave gets hollow it nosedives. My advice, unless only riding really full waves, a reasonable level of rocker is advisable. Quite a while ago, there was a discussion about board length. I think Larry Goddard had advocated .7 of your height. Ro...

Re: French paipo
Rodndtube, I think you're right, a downscale version of the Austin shape without reducing the width would lead to a weird shape. I will probably go for a basic "thumbstone" template, straight rails, rounded nose, like a mini mini simmons. I will also go for a pretty flat bottom, only a li...

Re: French paipo
The Austin shape is a good all around shape that I have ridden in knee high to double over head. My Checkered RPM were 1-7/8 thick and 19-7/8 wide and for me, 50 inches long. Length guidelines are up to your sternum if you want to arm and kick paddle (with swim fins). The plan shape of the Checkered...

Re: fin placement on bodyboard?!
There are many drop knee enthusiasts that use a pair of relatively small skegs (fins), small in height and longer in base, with the skegs asymmetrically set to reflect inflection points. Very nice mini-skegs/sidebites. I have a pair of the VT for trials when covid-19 breaks and I can hit some real s...

Re: Mediterranean Paipo Sessions (Valencia, Winter 2021)
The POV stuff , while no doubt personally enjoyable..doesn't tell the story at all. Would much rather see it occurring from the beach..still..I would love to surf the Meditereanen! I have to agree with you on that one, Dr. Robert. I tend to just get dizzy vertigo. Generally speaking, I prefer a bro...

Re: Re-shape
Oh yeah!!! Not always an air drop, of course, but very steep. Usually a nice wall to work with. The lip is hitting you with a rolling surge of water... the results vary. Various elements of where in the tidal change, how much tidal change, swell direction, period, etc. I'll ride this spot but you wo...

Re: Re-shape
I already wear a lacrosse rib protectors at this one place I surf! That must be some extreme skipping or you must surf a lot more on your belly/ribs than I do, I have never experienced anything that extreme that would need chest protection in all my time surfing. Are you leaving the water surface o...

Re: Re-shape
In this instance I could give up a little bit of speed for a little less skipping. I already wear lacrosse rib protectors at this one place I surf! A matt, other than trying to learn how to ride one, isn't real great in big surf.

Re: Re-shape
I've often thought of how to handle high-speed waves with some cross chop. Skimming from peak to peak of a little bit of cross-swell is challenging. Up to moderate sea state (chop style), but not high seas, hydrofoils and bi-/tri-hulls are sometimes used. Boats have bows (v-bottom fronts/nose areas)...

It is a real bummer. Same issue with the new formulation of Vipers about 6 years ago... hard heals. Can't imagine real hard and rigid is great for the ankles either.

Kage is sorta in that neck of the woods but as Uncle G notes it is rather far inland... on the road to Yosemite from San Francisco.

Re: Rick Surfboards Paipo
Yes, drilling a hole was all so common in the early days. No simple leash plugs although some people made fiberglass loops on the board. It was easier to hold on to a paipo then a longboard or a short boart (7'6") back then so it open up some breaks that foot surfers would want to avoid. We als...

As you may have discovered it is now possible to drag and drop an image directly into the "Reply" or "Post" space from one's computer. However, I wasn't able to directly drop and drag the photo below into the post. It was easy to copy and paste the photo's link into the Attachmen...
