Re: deathbed paipos rule.
Now xmas is over (for us downunder at least) how thick is that board? If it is as thick as it looks I'm interested in the technique for getting such a board through waves. I've been going thinner & plan to go thinner again, because I found a board even 1 7/8" at the thickest point too much ...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market
On one level, "chook" just refers to a chicken that is eaten, on another level it is slang for something disorganised. I don't think younger people go into a shop and ask for a "chook" much but phrases like a "chook with it's head cut off" remain in the vernacular. For ...

Anyone talented at photoshop?
Anyone talented at using photoshop? We have some photos that were taken from 70s slides and they could do with some cleaning up for an interview.

Soulglider, so does your displacement hull design differ in any significant way from a longer hull ? How do you turn your board?

Re: Fin recommendations
I bought a set of fins yesterday because I wanted to see if a different fin would more easily allow turns at speed. The previous fins were foiled both sides and wanted to go straight ahead while I wanted to turn. So they were cut right down and while an improvment, I wanted to know if I could do bet...

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards
Rod, This issue of thickness distribution seems to play an important role in how far forward/back you ride. Your comment about - you may as well be handplaning, raises the issue of the HPD, which is more like sophisticated bodysurfing. While Paipojim (thanks) has way more experience riding a HPD tha...

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards
Rod, Thanks. It's interesting in some of the photos that I have of me surfing that the front section of the board isn't in the water. Larry Goddard's boards have no thickness in the nose it is all in the rear half. Chest back - planing sweet spot? What sort of rail are you referring to as 'upturned'...

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards
Rod,
You're not getting away with a quick answer. Specifically, how do reckon rocker, rail design and skegs differ? Difference in planing spot - ok, where do you think it should be - further forward? Of course, this will vary with board length etc.

A difference between designing a paipo and other boards
I've been thinking about this for a while, particularly as I am exposed to a variety of people who ride paipo. A fundamental issue design difference between paipo and stand-up boards seems to be that paipo can be turned from the nose. Wally Froiseth added handgrips which have been duplicated by a ra...

Re: Fin recommendations
I ride my board with fins and finless but took the fins for a spin yesterday. The main reason was I wanted to see how they went on a wave that goes full and needs a big-cutback to link with the next section. The fins are D-ish, with lots of speed they didn't turn great. The larger fins tracked too m...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market
I think a reasonable argument can be made for the bellybogger being considered a paipo: 1) prototypes pre-dated the Morey boogie board 2) despite the rotomoulding its origins are in paipo boards & other boards of Dicks I have seen photos suggest a strong paipo interest 3) not high on flotation 4...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market
Paipo Nui & HPD were commercial enterprises. HPD is still going. Gus Acosta makes his Wave Arrows. Austin keeps Rod in paipos. For Australia & historical material see http://home.brisnet.org.au/~bgreen/bgpage/ In Oz Dick Ash of bellybogger fame was probably the largest scale. Jamie Farfor (h...

Re: Pirate Fish Alaia Remo II
The theory is fine of using the current rather than fighting it, but the north NSW/south Qld points can get a sweep that runs south to north that just carries you away from the take-off area in seconds. Jump off the rocks and in a second you can be 100yards from where you started. Sometimes you can ...

Re: Pirate Fish Alaia Remo II
I recently met Dave Jackman who has been interviewed for the paipo interview series. At some stage, an updated interview will be posted, more photos and details about Dave's construction method. He vacuum bagged a thin foam core inside a thin fibreglass shell. I think getting a very thin and stiff b...

I've only done floor repairs with cork. What do you use to work with it for shaping and what would you seal it with - varnish?

Re: Gluing Foam?
On my recent trip to NZ I met Dave Jackman. He glues EVA foam to fibreglass using F2 glue. One of the purposes of the EVA is added buoyancy.
