My wife will be ok with the finished board. She wasn't enthused about half a broken board from the side of the road. The aesthetics will be all due to Harry, my shaping errors will be well concealed.

Re: Bob's Paipo

Thanks Harry.

Looks like the board will fall apart before the plug comes out. My plugs usually are 90 degrees to the stringer, so it will be interesting to see if this direction works better. The more important experimental part is the tail. Lots to ponder over on this one.

Thanks Harry.

Looking good. The board will put me to shame. I can walk down to the surf, no-one will pay me attention, they'll be stunned by the glass job.

Looking forward to what 2022 brings.

Thanks again.

Re: Bob's Paipo

Thanks Harry for both the thread and the offer of glassing. Not so sure about the famous bit. Ok, the back story. I was walking to my car after a surf and see a guy with a broken longboard. He was trying to break the fins out. He asked if I wanted the tail half, I declined, as I didn't think my wife...

Re: Basics.

Gday, I'm no expert but don't apply a second/third coat etc until the coat you applied is completely dry. It shouldn't be tacky. Unlike applying by hand or cloth, you can't smooth out overspray so don't go heavy with spray, just nice even coats. A non-fibrecloth can be used to deal with pool. You ar...

Mike Stewart - Shipstern. Lots of interesting finless technique on show

I found this video interesting on a number of counts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woTKncdIAtU

Look at his legs - at time only one or neither are in contact with the board, but they are in contact with the wave face.

From the look of it, I wondered if it was motorised but apparently not: https://www.taylorsmistakehandski.com/p ... e-handski/

Tom Morey sign on the Big Island

I read a sign had been installed on the BIg Island commemorating Tom Morey and the boogie board, one side, on the other information about paipo boards. This link depicts the sign at Honis Beach Park: https://kauainownews.com/2021/11/06/wave-riders-pay-tribute-to-tom-morey-creator-of-the-modern-day-b...

Thanks Uncle G.

Anyone have access to Bazooka, written by Tom Morey, which appeared in the first issue of The Surfers Journal?

Re: A Ripple in the Force

Thanks Nels. I liked his boogieboard style . I also thought this quote was pretty good: “Hey! A lot of my multimillionaire friends . . . they’re gone,” Mr. Morey said in 2007. “Nobody’s trying to kidnap my kids, because they don’t have any money! I’m not running from the IRS. I don’t have any kind o...

Re: A Ripple in the Force

Uncle G,

I just watched a video with him and his wife, they both seemed pretty cool people.

Do you know anything his flippers?

Thanks

Re: A Ripple in the Force

I never really rode one but from what I've read an innovative guy. Some interesting stuff here: https://www.ocregister.com/2021/10/15/tom-morey-inventor-of-the-boogie-board-dies-at-age-86/ Anyone know about Morey's flippers? He talks about them in this interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWZ2...

Re: Mini Paipos

It will be interesting to hear what difference the bottoms make on this style of board, especially given your riding position isn't on the board as such.

Song with a paipo reference

It's not often you come across a song that references paipo boards. The first part of this video is from the original writer of the song who asks people to come up with a verse. At around 0.46 you start to see & hear Stig Waidelich, son of John Waidelich one of the originators of the Paipo Nui s...

Re: Paulownia paipo

Are you using the fibreglass board much. Once you have a few boards, it is hard to regularly use them all. It is fun, pulling out a board that you haven't surfed for a while.

Re: First Build

I thought about this some more - my fibreglass boards are some where like 6KG. You might even get away with 1/2" . What were you going to seal it with - if it was oil you could always test and refine. If varnished, you pretty much got what you have.
