Re: Paepo’o - my boards
here is a video showing how to use butterflys to stabalize splits in wood. They are particularly good if shaping from planks. Rocker etc sells tools for making and setting the inlays. https://www.google.com/search?q=Bow+Tie+Inlay+to+stabalize+wood&rlz=1CAPVCB_enUS802US802&oq=Bow+Tie+Inlay+to...

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
I gave my 12EEE and other profile points (require long swims and burst) to Yucca and they got back with this: " Our fins have a wide foot pocket. You can probably use a XL barefoot, if you want the fin sock go with XXL. I think soft flex would work best. Let us know if you have any other questi...

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
I know your home breaks well. I spent much of my teenage summers at the Inlet, OC and Assateaque. I rode long boards on the North Side and paipo boards on the South side of the inlet in the 60s / early 70s. I will camp on Asssateague June 28 - July 2 this year. I was down for a fall swell last Octob...

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
Just took quick look at Yucca web site. I would prefer to buy rather than modify fins, I see they have different stiffness models. What kind of conditions do use ultra soft in? How much distance do you cover in a typical session? I need gentle on the body for long swims but quick thrust for take off...

will check out Yucca, I wanted to use lighter weight Da Fin but could not get any that fit.

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
I meant to add .. I would not mind giving up some directional control with whiskers. Furthermore, I want to keep my feet out of the water anyway once planing. I can see how a body surfer would want more directional control from the swim fin. But I get that in my Paipo/fin design. Notice that Da Fins...

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
To complicate this, "fins" are added to forcefins: Sharks Teeth (short and deep) for directional control or Whiskers (long and shallow) for adding thrust. I wonder whether adding whiskers to my originals would give me the extra thrust I want while retaining the comfortable distance swimmin...

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
yea, the Rip Force and Hockey Fin, which both need agility and thrust, each have less width in the foot area. But the Slim Fin also has less width there and it is optimized for ease of straight lap swimming so that attribute is confusing. Although, stiffness seems to be the main attribute for balanc...

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
I completed a pool test of iteration #2. It has less stress on the body then the Pro version and more thrust than Originals. And the outline promises to have less drag when on the wave.. its narrower. I swam continuously for over 1/2 hr without issue and it felt good. IMG_20210606_130254382.jpg Ri...

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
Two alternate ideas if this does not work out: 1.) Grind away thickness of a stiffer Pro until it is more flexible; I am only reducing length and width in this one 2.) Add in stiffener plates to the original until it gets more stiffness. How about interchangeable carbon fiber plates? Same concept as...

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
Exactly, balance long distance paddling with take-off force. It would be easy to overshoot and take too much off and end up with too little stiffness for the take off. Ergo, I am looking at 3-4 iterations so I hit it right. 1/8-1/4" per iteration. If takes even more than 4 then so be it.

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
I tried iteration #1 of the FF Pro mod today in the pool. * I paddled for over 1/2 hr .. seemed easier that the previous session with unmodified FF Pro * the stiffness felt somewhere between the Pro and Original but still closer to the Pro * No negatives Unfortunately I did not think to take an unmo...

Here is 1st pass at FF Pro mod: IMG_20210603_134157809.jpg Right to Left: Force Fin Pro - before mod Force Fin Pro - After iteration 1 of Mod Da Fin XL I will try FF Pro mod in pool on Friday. I think I will know right away if I need more off or if I went too far. I already went a bit thinner than t...

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
I used Force Fin Pro for years. I loved them. They were the only fins I could find that were comfortable and had sufficient stiffness to get thrust at take off. I wear US 12.5 EEE and must have a high arch. Everything else destroyed my feet. I estimate that as a result of 200-300 yard rides at my fa...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study
Good idea to go a bit big on a design that can be refined down to get right sized flex. You can always add material but it seems easier to incrementally remove. I have been putting cork on the deck so I can do the same on the bottom. Somewhat like Crispi's approach, I notice that using Carbon Fiber ...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study
My own mat riding goes back to around 1960 in Ocean City NJ. 60sMat.png That one was not the stiff canvas type. It was very very flexible but surfed. I am kicking myself for not picking up an old school rubber/canvas Surfoplane when they made them again a couple years back. I have to actually build ...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study
I still prefer the feel and ride of a shape shifting mat over anything else. The advantage of a mat over flex foam is that you can harden the turning edge by squeezing the opposite side. I can make that work to a point then need something more rigid for certain conditions. I am trying to leave a bal...
