Re: swim fins - DaFin
I’ve always had problems finding fins that didn’t double as implements of torture. My feet aren’t really that big at size 13 but they are real wide (EEEE+) and have freakishly high arches. My poor dogs have been squeezed into cramp hell and rubbed raw to the point of bleeding by just about every pai...

Re: Help...1/4 in. Marine ply, need a plan!
Bob, The similarity is no coincidence; I’ve always liked the look of Mr. Galera’s boards and studied the pictures that are included in his interview very carefully. I think the one thing that intrigued me the most was the technique he used to build the board up from various pieces. That’s what I did...

Re: Help...1/4 in. Marine ply, need a plan!
I made this board with some 5mm ply that I had laying around. If I remember correctly 5mm is right around .20 inch. This board is about 48 inches long and 22 inches at the wide point. The thickness varies from .40 inches in the body of the board to just shy of 3/4 at the rails. Overall the board rid...

Re: Leash for fiberglass paipo/bellyboard?????
On my foam and glass boards, especially in big surf, I use a leg leash like jbw4600. I have one board with a plug up front and one near the tail, I tried a wrist leash with the front plug one time on a pretty big day at Honolua Bay and it was a horror story. Not only did I run into the kick back pro...

Re: Credit where credit is due (rant).
Way back in the olden days, late 50’s early 60’s, when I was just a little squirt. We lived right next to Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Waikiki. It was maybe a five or ten minute walk to the Wall. There weren’t too many distractions back then so it was pretty much “pau school…down the beach”...
Re: Oahu
Aloha Bob, I'm glad you like the avatar. It started out as a scanned image of a turtle petroglyph and a small sample of Celtic ribbon work. I just played around with it in Corel Photo-Paint; adding color, working with layers, effects and such like that. So its both, part mine and part some other sou...
Re: Oahu
SJB, Which of the Hawaiian Islands is the best is has always been a point of contention among visitors and residents alike. It all boils down to what you like and what you are looking for. Every island has its own unique characteristics and is special in its own way. Rod and Ted are correct in obser...

Re: Where to surf in Maui?
From my perspective Bob and Rod are right on with their observations. I grew up on Oahu and back in the 60s paipo were everywhere. I think it was pretty much a “necessity is the mother of invention” thing for us kids back then. Materials were readily available and a lot of the time; free. For most o...

Re: Where to surf in Maui?
Even though summer is our south shore season, getting good waves can be an iffy proposition. We are in the wave shadow of Lanai and Kahoolawe so the angle has to be just right. That being said, there are a lot of very good spots to choose from. Lahaina is on the south side of the island so if a swel...

Re: Where to surf on Oahu
Do you mean Lanikai? lanikai is a beach community on the windward side of Oahu, sort of an old suburb of the town of Kailua. If that's the place you'll be staying you shouldn't have any problem finding some waves, especially if you're going during the winter. I grew up in Kailua and spent a lot of t...
