Re: Fresh water Paipo

Have you launched any new paipo up there in TC yet? I saw yr post a few weeks ago, but due to time and technical difficulties, haven't been able to comment. I'm in Grand Rapids and generally ride anywhere from South Haven to Muskegon depending on swell direction. Even though flotation is a factor yo...

Re: New handplane, first alaia, paipo mods

Dr., The handle is a solid piece of red cedar. I glued it on with epoxy, figuring if it ever shows any sign of coming loose I can reinforce it with some screws or dowels... but for now it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Surffoils, Thanks! I've been practicing at pinstriping lately, definitely som...

Re: New handplane, first alaia, paipo mods

Bob, if you mean on the plywood paipo, no - those are just screw holes that were already in the plywood when I found it on the side of the road. ;}

New handplane, first alaia, paipo mods

So, I haven't been able to get on here in a while, so I figure I'll just lump everything I've been up to into one topic. Over the winter I decided to hack down the tail of my favorite plywood paipo, converting it to a fish tail, I also refined the shape of the nose. These were HUGE improvements in m...

Dug out this old relic from my past

Been away from the forum, but I've been busy with some new boards. Varnishing my first alaia and hoping to test run it as soon as some waves hit here (it's the slow season here). Also got a handplane in the works.... Anyway, this was one of my first boards, the only one that survived anyway. It's ab...

Re: Pin-tail alaia?

My limited understanding of design history is that alaia, generally being about 6 to 12 feet need more of a wide square tail for speed and control. A wood plank board with a pin tail would generally necessitate more length - 13 feet or more, making it an olo or paddleboard. Of course these are very ...

Re: Yikes!

Sweet, thanks for the recommendation. I've been window shopping on ebay and saw one or two of those. If not for this winter, definitely by next winter. Extra buoyancy is definitely welcome in fresh water!

Re: Yikes!

My only full suit is a 3 mil, and I'm not exactly rolling in cash, so unless I find a killer deal on some cold water gear I'll probably only get out a few more times between now and spring. My goal in the meantime is to build at least one alaia and several more paipo, then show up at the beach in sp...

Re: Yikes!

The water temp was 62 degrees. Air was in the 40's with what must have been 30 or 40 mph gusts of wind on Friday. Getting my longboard back to the car was probably the most difficult part of the weekend!

Re: Yikes!

Sorry for triple posting, but I couldn't figure out how to get the images to show up in the right order, so I just split it into another post. I don't know who these guys are, I just wanted to show the scale of the waves to the riders. It actually got fairly crowded by noon this day.

Re: Yikes!

So here's the scoop. This was a massive NW wind swell that blew up all down Lake Michigan, peaking around late morning on Friday Sep. 30th, then gradually diminishing thru Saturday afternoon. I got to the water about 2 pm on Friday and this is what it looked like. IMG_0490.jpg IMG_0485.jpg IMG_0479....

Sure, I'll take some pics. I dunno if I'll find full 16 foot waves by the time I get to the water. They probably won't be the prettiest waves either!

My Surfography

I started writing this "surfography" (or "smurfography" since it refers to multiple disciplines?) the other day. It ended up a bit longer than I thought. It's really just a summary of a very long 'beginning' of the story, though really. ;) I'm Jarrid Brill. I was born in Kalamazoo, MI some time afte...

Re: Irene - Mid Atlantic States

Florida has been very good -- that is where I should have gone! A friend sighted a paipo rider scoring some good waves but by the time he was near him the guy had caught a wave in.
Was it at Jacksonville beach on saturday 9/17? If so, it was me! :D

The new lineup

Hey, all. I was on the old forum as brillynt. I picked that name in a hurry and didn't really care for it, so changed it to Asanagoo.

I just got back from a road trip to Jacksonville, where I got into some salty waves for the first time in a few years. I'll probably put up some pics later.
