Re: A couple of waves in Galicia, Spain
I rode my HPD board this afternoon. That board is definitly more complicated to turn than my plywood board, I have been using this board occasionally for 2 years and every time I am still struggling to make a turn and avoid side slipping. I feel like I need to lift the outside rail, like on a bodyb...

Re: SR-72 canard H fin
This reminds me of a prone board I saw that had a metal hydrofoil extending downward about 12 inches. As I remember, the builder said he paddled it upside down to get outside and flipped it over and kicked hard to take off. Seemed like it could get very exciting to run into anything.

I'm gonna try to make it, but won't know until very late. Tell me the water will be warm.

Definitely looks like you are having fun. I ride my paipo exclusively now - it's easy, fun and well-respected in Hawaii.

Got some surf
Haven't surfed in a while. I did manage to lock my keys the truck storage (RamBox) compartment last time I was out.
Got some little ones this am by myself.

Re: Grabbing the rail
I, too, grab that outside rail. Mechanics vary according to the wave and the vehicle. On the Malama Kai going right, I use a handgun style takeoff and slither forward to get the right hand on the nose and the left on the rail. On the Malama Kai going left (for example in Costa Rica), I start with th...
Re: Cramps!
Fatigue, especially in the setting of poor conditioning, sets off cramps for me. During a four hour surf session when the surf kept getting better ("just one more wave"), I got stuck outside in gnarly overhead surf with my thighs in continuous spasm. I had to arm paddle into an airdrop tak...

Sorry for the late reply.
It is a 44" board, 9.9/10 condition. No dings, no scratches, no sun damage. Ridden only a few times.

Hey,
Josh at Xylem is paying $50 for referrals for paipo sales.
If you buy a board from him during 2015, he will send me $50. Tell him Ted from the Big Island sent you.

Re: Vintage El Paipo bodyboard
I had one of these in the early '80's. It was the worst board I ever rode. No lie. That reverse cut nose would pearl and go sixty to zero in a fraction of a second. If you were lucky, you would go out the front and bash your head on the bottom. If you were less lucky, you would sprain your wrists an...

I'm hoping to go in 2015.
The 2014 paipo entry looks like for age 50 plus or 250 pounds plus. Bummers if both age and weight are required.

Re: Papa Paepo o & duckdiving
I have some great scars on my back from attempting to duck dive my HPD in 6 inches of water when a six foot wave kicked up in front of me. As I got sucked off the bottom and thrown onto dry reef, I wondered if the HPD would suffer as much as I did. I might try turning the HPD sideways next time I am...

On my kneeboard I prefer lefts. On the paipo and bodyboard, I prefer rights.

Re: Riding position
Paul Lindbergh told me that paipo riders originated the superman style and that bodysurfers copied it. The superman style is useful on the HPD to get weight far enough forward to prevent the board from bucking; Paul says to trim forward until the board accelerates, then trim back a tiny bit onto the...
