Re: Big Island of Hawaii, March 2024
Big NW swell at 320 degrees Wed/Thurs, but really shadowed on kohala coast. Rideable, but small.

Big Island of Hawaii, March 2024
I'm heading to the Big Island. I think I still have and HPD and a smallish (44") Austin thruster in my buddy's garage. Swell has been good so far this season. Anybody want to meet up?

Re: Calf cramping
Definitely post-season. Haven't been in the water for years - probably 6 years. Not sure I can still swim.
Pickle juice really works. Take a swig if you feel a cramp coming on (much easier while playing pickleball than surfing.)

Re: Calf cramping
I have had gnarly cramps while surfing and while playing pickleball. Strangely enough, drinking pickle juice works to relieve cramps almost instantly. Legitimate medical studies suggest that some sort of neural sensing of the taste of picklejuice interupts the cramping signal without correcting elec...

I texted him just now. I'll let you know.
Re: Sumatra
P-pass is said to be machine-like with small takeoff zone with strict lineup rules. I think shoulder season, with not too big waves and not too many surfers, would be reasonable. Of P-pass "On most days you will be living a warm Pacific dream setup with a crew of friendly surfers sharing the li...
Re: Sumatra
I've thinking about going to Pohnpei on shoulder season - just need a crew of old farts and prone riders to pack the camp.

Re: Monolith 2001: XLPE
Wow, that CNC shop looks professional! If the material doesn't absorb water or otherwise suffer from use without glassing, you could surf it as a slab and then refine it incrementally as you get real world feedback. (As an aside, my bathroom remodel with planned DIY tilework had stalled for months u...

I'm out of shape. That might be good for self rescue!
Re: The Paipo
Looks too pricey for me - the 4 dollar Foodland rubber slippers are just the ticket.

Re: Looking for a Better Fit, Modifying Swim Fins
I tried Da Fin when I was in good shape and surfing a lot - never could figure out what the width was good for and the stiffness was too much for more than three strokes. I always returned to my Churchills because they didn't kill my feet or give me cramps prematurely. Surviving a surf session has b...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo
I've riden modern bodyboards, glass paipo boards and wooden paipo boards - they are all fun to ride. Josh at Xylem made me a nice 47" paulownia board that glides like a traditional paipo, but can carve like bodyboard.
Go for it and have fun!

Re: A couple of waves in Galicia, Spain
I rode my HPD board this afternoon. That board is definitly more complicated to turn than my plywood board, I have been using this board occasionally for 2 years and every time I am still struggling to make a turn and avoid side slipping. I feel like I need to lift the outside rail, like on a bodyb...
