Re: Anybody has paipo videos to share ?

Happy New Year to all the paipo faithful. Almost forgot how to log in here. Nothing new to share, but some of my oldies in glorious VGA resolution are parked here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLsRPO0t3J_MR71Jcr11zCQ Other than the red board, all the other funky looking paipos in this vid https:...

Re: Huuricane lane surf

I had some fun on the paipo, but the swell from Lane wasn't that great compared to hurricane swells I remember. The storm was way over hyped by the authorities. Fwiw, the Stormsurf site called it accurately throughout - storm passing south of the islands and real swell less than 8ft. The "authoritie...

Re: Selling boards

...People are just so afraid to break from what surf community says you should ride. ....... Maybe you should consider breaking from your current surf community instead. Folks are more receptive to paipos in other places- Norcal & Hawai'i for example. Looks like there's decent interest in Europe & ...

Re: Need feedbacks on the HPD XL

Like other people said, you'll gain nothing safety wise with a HPD. They are just as hard as plywood and will probably snap back at you just as hard if you put a leash on one. I've never surfed any "traditional" paipo with a leash. I think it's dangerous. You must be surfing really crowded condition...

Like JBW said, you should come just a little ways further north. Good odds you'll find some fun paipo waves this time of year.

Re: Flipper repair for an Idiot

Duct tape is your friend.Hopefully you have fin socks or just regular socks to wear since you'll have to build up the tape around the whole strap and it will rub against your ankle. Is there a tire or bike repair shop/equipment nearby? Those vulcanizing compounds they use to glue patches on inner tu...

Re: New Wood Paipo Mnia board

Thanks Trevor. I'll make a 5/8" version also. So horizontal orientation of the grain is the best? At least with the C grade ply most of my boards are made of. The full size boards I made from CDX with grain oriented vertical have all come out too stiff. I have no experience with laminating 1/8" she...

Nice! What kind of wood are you using? How much rocker in the nose? Post up a pic of that if you can.

Re: New Wood Paipo Mnia board

I like the flex of 1/2 " thick ply boards in the barrel, but they're too flexy in larger waves and they don't last long w/ me. I've had good luck w/ 5/8" thick epoxied ply boards. At least with the recycled cdx ply I usually use, orienting the grain horizontal rather than vertical actually works bet...

Re: Can you kneeride a plywood paipo ?

Yes you can!! Jack Lindholm, the "inventor" of drop knee bodyboarding" credits plywood paipo riders as his inspiration. You can even stand up ride a plywood board. Look up the vids of Val Ching from way back in the day, stand up riding his paipo at Waikiki Walls. There's also a famous picture of Wal...

Re: Which paipo for hollow waves ?

... Fortunately, I brought another paipo with me, this one was stiff plywood, with an HPD shape. Perfect for that kind f waves, very fast, it provided me the longest rides I have ever had, not to mention the crazy drifting/flying feeling. I was finally able to do the superman stand :) I just bought...

Re: Which paipo for hollow waves ?

I disagree (partially)with the comment above. Traditional paipos can catch waves early and a long way out just like a longboard as long as the wave turns into something eventually. If folks don't want to take my word for it, they should go to O'ahu and watch a spot where you can still find a few pai...

Re: Which paipo for hollow waves ?

Zensuni- When you use your swin fins can you feel the blade flexing a lot when you kick? If so, you should definitely upgrade your fins. Vipers, Duckfeet, and Da Fin are all popular with paipo riders and bodysurfers. They'll take some getting used to at first, but it will make a big difference in yo...

Re: Which paipo for hollow waves ?

What do you mean by "low end bodyboard fins"? I haven't noticed much difference in all the Churchill clones out there. Even though bodyboarders are using them to charge ridiculous waves, I've never found Churchill style fins the best for paipo riding or bodysurfing. When bodysurfing or riding a paip...

Re: Which paipo for hollow waves ?

Pull the board back under you when you regain speed. Paipos can transition flat sections as well as any longboard or SUP doing that. Do you think a longer board would help to catch weack waves ? Paipos depend on overall surface / planing area so it's not necessarily length, consider width too. Incr...

Re: Which paipo for hollow waves ?

Keep in mind the style or technique you use when riding wood paipos isn't an all or nothing game. All the old timers may have preferred one style over others, but most used a combo of styles to suit the wave & conditions. That's how I ride too. I'll often be doing superman, no hands, boogie style, e...

What's up with Vimeo? I used to be able to watch vids from there without a problem. Now I get a black screen or a mocking "this video won't play with your current set up" message, even if I allow all their obnoxious scripts to run.

Re: Which paipo for hollow waves ?

..This is a great performance, but I don't think this is what wood boards are made for. Nonsense!! The only rule for riding a wood paipo "correctly" is to ride it whatever way feels the most fun to you. I'm old enough to remember seeing many of the old skool paipo riders in Hawai'i, and those folks...

Re: Cork and bamboo paipo

Oh bummer!! Would've loved to ride that thing more. Good luck w/ the auction. Might be a sleeper deal for someone. That board looks and rides like a traditional paipo, but there's a lot of modern innovative stuff underneath. Might have to get me a custom then. I'd like to see what happens if you pla...
