Re: 3 Paipos at once?!!

I still have a couple of those "Bodypos", but I haven't ridden one in awhile. I really never left the plywood. Did we ever meet in person? I'm terrible w/ faces and (real)names. The Bodypo was a good concept and could've filled a niche with a little more refinement + working out the issues...

Re: 3 Paipos at once?!!

You should've come up the road a little ways to OB when you lived in Pacifica. There's a small group of paipo riders that regularly surf the north end. I used to occasionally paipo at Rockaway, Montara & even the north end of Lindy.

Re: Basics.

You have the right idea. I used that spray can varnish once. I did only 2 coats on each side, but I was in a rush to surf. For more lasting results, you need a few more coats. I remember the dry to the touch & recoat time for that can is pretty fast. You can spray the opposite side of the board ...

Re: Parabolic Rails

Fwiw, the "shed door" has been ridden almost exclusively in fast beach break ( Ocean Beach SF)for the last 10+ years. Had several fun sessions on it this past holiday week in clean overhead surf, with long fast hollow sections. I keep a similarly shaped board on O'ahu that I've surfed at E...

Re: Tidal bore wave

That's really cool, and I wonder if it's a "first" for that place. Riding a bore wave is one of the things on my bucket list. Looks like you lost the wave more from being forced out of position by all the longboarders than from any deficiency in your board. I've found that on really small ...

Re: First Build

The shape is fine & it will work at its current length or shortened. 8kg is pretty heavy, but I'd try it as is before planing it down. Once you get it in the water the weight issue won't be as noticeable. Not sure how a board made with that kind of glue joint flexes or how durable it will be.

Re: First Build

My experience with boards like this is stuff like concaves and channels look cool, but they don't provide a dramatic impact on board performance. You'll have as much fun on the simple design as a more complicated one. A good guide for width is to stand with your arms relaxed, elbows bent up like you...

Should be a fun ride with a lot of float. How heavy is the board? All the paulownia boards I've ridden were super light compared to my usual plywood.

FWIW,
Boat builders have a long held superstition against using walnut in watercraft.
It's known to them as "coffin wood".
I wouldn't worry about it tho'. ;)
Well, since there's some old tradition of using coffin lids as paipo boards, it's all good...

Re: New project... this time a Paipo

Great classic bodyboard collection! The BZ and Turbo III look in excellent condition, and the Atunas is pretty rare. Epoxy is the way to go if you're using EPS. I strongly suggest doing an equal thickness wood ply layer on top and bottom. With wood only on one side, the board will be prone to crack ...

RIP Harry Akisada

Aloha Paipo brothers and sisters, Sad to report that paipo legend, Harry Akisada, passed away early this month. Harry was an inspiration and influence to multiple generations of surfers on O'ahu. He was a fixture at all the good paipo spots on the island for so long, it's hard to imagine not seeing ...

Anybody remember the Scott Hawaii fins from the 1980's? Yuccas look like they're based primarily off that old design. The Scotts were good fins, more power than Churchills and more durable than the Vipers of that era.

Re: Cornwall style board

It's a shame that board broke. You could've sold it for a good price to some hipster with that cool paint job. 1/4" Ply was always too flexy for me, and even if the board was glassed to keep it from breaking, the rails feel way too thin. Most of my boards are made from plywood way worse than wh...

Re: Huuricane lane surf

I had some fun on the paipo, but the swell from Lane wasn't that great compared to hurricane swells I remember. The storm was way over hyped by the authorities. Fwiw, the Stormsurf site called it accurately throughout - storm passing south of the islands and real swell less than 8ft. The "autho...

Re: Need feedbacks on the HPD XL

Like other people said, you'll gain nothing safety wise with a HPD. They are just as hard as plywood and will probably snap back at you just as hard if you put a leash on one. I've never surfed any "traditional" paipo with a leash. I think it's dangerous. You must be surfing really crowded...

Like JBW said, you should come just a little ways further north. Good odds you'll find some fun paipo waves this time of year.
