Re: SR-72 canard H fin

Great work you two. Dave, what feeling did you get from the longer foils ?
CRISPI, do you think the two foils create a longer 'wheelbase' rather than a single, I'm using a length of 23 inches that's very stable.
Have you seen the current commercial foils with masts up to 3 feet deep ? Crazy.

So how did it go ? What design elements did you feel working ?

Re: Design evolution - part 1

Hi Bob, I see the trailing edge as the last buoyancy of the board. As you slow it naturally drops at the tail but by keeping the tail as thick as you can it delays that drop so you get more projection, especially off the wave into a channel or over a flat spot. CHRISPI, your boards just kill me. I l...

Re: Design evolution - part 1

Interesting you mention a thin trailing edge, I found that a thicker trailing edge gives more run out onto the shoulder.
I like volume, flat bottoms, soft front rails and squared off trailing edges. Not very fashionable, but it's maximised for speed.

Re: Fins of a New Generation.

More testing today on my DIY paipo. Lots of good things about the new fin design but there's always more to discover.

Re: Fins of a New Generation.

I'm enjoying how these fins ride. You don't have to design them like a Wing added onto a plane but more like an individual entity, it is its own craft. The central area is like a foiled fin but the angled sides are thinner and designed to provide a Newtonian hydrodynamic effect. They're very stable ...

Re: New H fin board

All these foils are from the same design foil from the Air Chair and that twin foil design comes from the Big Front Wing and Small Tail Wing concept from airplanes. Th bigger foil/ wing gives the majority of lift and the rear foil/ wing adjusts the AOA of the front foil. So the efficiency of the rea...

Re: Fins of a New Generation.

Bob, I've had them out in beachbreaks from dribbler to head high on a glass paipo and a surfboard and it's the same experience of lots of drive for little effort. Standard surfboard fins try to be good at everything but this one is just for getting down the line with the least effort. The posts on t...

Re: Fins of a New Generation.

Thanks for the question Bob, yes it's a 'Floating' fin, the idea is that the base of any fin constantly interrupts the flow along the hull and it adds massive drag, more drag than is needed because you can turn a surfcraft without a fin but we all have these big base fins. However if you lift the fi...

Only 4 mm thick but because of the bends it's not going to break.

Re: Fins of a New Generation.

So I've vacbagged layers of glass and veneer over the foam mold and when it's set, pop it off the mold and it's ready to shape. If you put the same number of layers of glass together it wouldn't be as strong as when you separate them with the veneer.

Re: Fins of a New Generation.

I'm really caught between spending ( wasting ) my time building either the twin blade or the Floating fin designs. The Floating concept is the most interesting so I'm sticking with that until I see something shiny that distracts me. Here's the latest... My idea is that if I can get the 'fin' away fr...

Re: Fins of a New Generation.

The Flume will be good to visualise how the water flows around each design over a range of angles. They all look smooth at 0 deg, but it's at what angle the flow starts to become turbulent and how it then flows that will bring a lot of insight. And all the specialty fof no like the Starfin, the Supe...

Re: Fins of a New Generation.

Hi David, I'll certainly contact you when they're ready. Fins are like anything else , they all provide a different experience.and maybe a different fin won't make you into Slater but it will be interesting to ride and give you a different understanding of how fins work. Here's another of my fin des...

Re: Fins of a New Generation.

The biggest problem is dealing with the massive volume of water coming out of the pump. I stood it in a bucket and flicked the switch and it shot a geyser about 20 feet in the air. Hmmmm....

Re: Fins of a New Generation.

The best way to test fins is in the surf but I'm building a Flume or a hydrodynamic water channel to test how water flow interacts with fins. It's 8 feet long and uses a pump to provide a smooth but fast flow to see how different fins interact at different angles.

Re: New H fin board

They are magnificent boards to look at , I can only imagine how fast they are to ride. As for the angled front section.. my story is that I tried every different version of traditional foil design that I could find, all sorts of materials, conventional scientific theories for several years. then I t...
