Re: Cork and bamboo paipo
I drew the outline in a CAD program first, just to play around with dimensions and shapes. I just liked the proportions of this shape, and it came out as 20" so I went with it.

Cork and bamboo paipo
I thought I'd share a little project I did this week. I've been wanting to try this for awhile — this is a cork, glass and bamboo paipo. 46.5" x 20" (17" in tail) x .625" thick. IMG_5726.JPG IMG_5727.JPG IMG_5728.JPG IMG_5729.JPG I used a combination of 4oz weave and 10oz unidire...

Re: Board outline, with and without fins
Fascinating thread. I'm learning a lot. I might just throw into the mix, if it matters, that the angle of yaw may well be 5-degrees or 12-degrees, but it's not positioned off the center line. The wave face hits a larger area on the board, as in the graphic attached. I think this difference is signif...

Re: Asymm
I think the benefit to an asymm prone board is in having a really versatile board. He said that he's made the board to be surfed on either side. There's nothing that says that you have to use the short rail toward the beach. I mean, maybe you have concave on one side, flat on the other...hard rails ...

Re: California Surfcraft Bodypo Review
Hi all - Flojo and Uncle Grumpy, I'm glad the blanks were easy to work with. I've found the same. The material is largely non-toxic, but I still recommend wearing a mask because of the fiberglass dust that'll kick up during shaping. Uncle Grumpy, I'm looking forward to your ride report, I hope you'r...

Re: California Surfcraft Bodypo Review
It might help if you think of the dorsal bump as a fiberglassed paipo inside the paipo. As I see it...a box beam structure stuck to a sandwich. It makes the board stiffer in the long direction, while still allowing flex at the rails and rear corners. Poobah is exactly right, although I hadn't thoug...

Re: california surfcrafts (cork boards)
Yes, I think you could. My handplanes have bamboo on the bottom, and paulownia would be better. The challenge I find is that the wood veneer and the cork both get wet and expand at different rates. That makes them want to pull away from each other and cause delamination. The nice thing about fibergl...

Re: california surfcrafts (cork boards)
That's the beauty of it, you don't need to seal the cork. Just cut out the outline, shape the rails to taste using sandpaper, and get in the water. My philosophy is this - make surf gear out of materials that can get wet, then let them get wet. Cork has been used in marine applications for hundreds ...

Re: california surfcrafts (cork boards)
It's a little different than you're picturing. See this diagram: 39-inch-Bat-Tail-blow-out-diagram_large.jpg And this one: Construction-Illustration_c400d86d-2600-4f70-bc51-7921360b647b_large.jpg The cork is sandwiched between layers of fiberglass. That's what gives it its strength. I could stop the...

Re: california surfcrafts (cork boards)
Are you using corecork like the lost boards? Yeah - I get the sheets from Core Composites in RI. Good stuff. However, there's a company in SoCal that recycles used cork into the same kind of sheets. They are working on the quality control right now. But it's possible, one day, to make these boards ...

Re: california surfcrafts (cork boards)
Hi everyone, this is Dave from California Surfcraft. I came across this post and I hope it's ok if I jump in. I'm glad you guys are interested in the design and materials, and I'm happy to answer any questions you have. I already apologized to Bob in an email, but sorry again — I know he was trying ...
