Re: Blue Plate Special

Skiff, The issue of reducing bounce is an interesting one. I''ve had two boards made from the same template - Larry Goddard's makaha master. Second board was thinner than the first to add duck-diving (and allow surfing in conditions where there aren't easy channels or where there are plenty of clean...

Re: Visit to Hawaii

Rod,

Have i ever sent you photos of my bisect board? It has stood up well in double-overhead waves and some pretty choppy, heavy waves.

Re: Blue Plate Special

Skiff, Like all surfcraft there is a balance. On first appearances your board to me seems way wide, but if it is 6'3" x 29"the ratio of length to width is not radically different to other paipo. To me it's a matter of what conditions a particular board is suited for. I'm sure these boards ...

Are you near Jon Wegener? See if he will let you test ride one? You could always ask Tom. Supply your weight & height. He's pretty helpful.

Re: Alaia for prone riding

5'-5' 5'" should be fine for an alaia to be ridden prone but probably too short to be ridden standup. Not impossible but difficult. The low bouyancy makes paddling and catching waves more difficult - especially if you are used to higher bouyancy surf craft. If you've ridden a HPD or ply boards ...

Re: Austin paipo shared shipping to HI?

Rod,

My understanding is that the wider boards are for smaller waves (up to 10'). Length would be .75 of height, or so. Age may have produced a wider board as well.

They are not built for duck-diving.

Re: Austin paipo shared shipping to HI?

SJB, Regarding your proposed length : width of 44" x 23". When it is considered in terms of ratios a 44" x 23 board has an L/W ratio of 0.525 Teds 44 x 20.25 has a L x W ratio of 0.465 Rod's Austin 50 x 20.25 has a L/W ratio of 0.405 Spudnuts 50 x 20 has a L/W ratio of 0.4 My board of...

Re: Austin paipo shared shipping to HI?

Ted, Apologies my post has nothng to do with your original thread. Spudnut. Larry Goodard once e-mailed me that he believed a board should be 0.75 your height. I'm less sure sure about a width 30% of your height. I'd need to check this a bit more (I think there were caveats on this one in terms of w...

Re: Pin-tail alaia?

Closest I have seen is some of Mr Mike's slim tail boards. They'll be in the archives but searching for Mr.Mike will bring up lots of hits. I think the point made about needing a reasonably wide tail is a fair one. The corners are your edge to hold in and what you turn from. If you had a short pinta...

Re: Fin recommendations

Hello Pete,

I know Poobah suggested to me once using a skimboard as a paipo when I was looking to avoid airline charges. They'd be hard work but I suspect in the right conditions could work. Why not.

I had the FCS fins I have cut down - haven't used them yet. They are 2 1/2" high by 3 3/4 " long.

I can't comment on your technique, but I'd be careful if you are going to leave such a dark coloured board in a car on a hot day - you may have a warp special.

Re: 'Nother board!

If you use a decent glue butt joints are fine. I believe Tom Wegener once employed tongue groove joints - I'm not sure if he still does. I've only ever used two pack epoxy for joints - avoid excessive clamping. Check the old forum for glue threads like: All you need to know about glues for wood in a...

Modifying UDT fins

I've read a few descriptions of modifying UDT fins and Bongo from Byron told me an angle grinder was used. Anyone know what sort of disc would be used or an alternative to an angle grinder?

Thanks.

Re: Oahu and the Big Island

Rod,

Isn't Paul Lindbergh on the big Island? I always found him approachable. Neal will know John Galera.
I gather the paipo aren't on display at the Bishop museum like they used to be. That could be a very interesting detour. Larry Goddard would probably be happy to chat.

Enjoy the trip.

There seems some very crossed wires here. I'm talking about the slope at the tail . After surfing an S deck paipo for a while then going back to a Galera no-fin, I could feel a very distinct section of my outer upper thigh getting worked. Re: Mini Pig

"your legs will still go out straight. think about it some more? why would your legs have to change angles just because the tail slopes?" S deck + slope changes the angle of your legs relative to the water. Less S and slope your legs will sit flatter. The difference isn't astronmical but i...

Re: Skegs

I largely ride finless and I'm more likely to lose the edge on fatter waves. It's simply a matter of adjusting your body position to regain control and a bit of anticipation that it is going to happen as the juice-o-meter drops. In such situations it's better to ride higher up in the wave.

Re: Where to surf in Maui?

Paipos were common in the 1960s. To appreciate the decline in paipo see the interview with Paul Lindbergh who makes the HPD boards: http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/Paipo_Interviews.shtml#Paul_Lindbergh Maui is home to a couple of great paipo riders, e.g Sean Ross : http://mypaipoboards.org/inter...
