Re: Rail curve, how does it work?

I'll take a stab at it. In surfboard design, I find rails to have a very complicated impact on performance. On surfcraft, the rail is another control surface. Control surfaces always induced drag. That's how they work. In a kayak, dragging a paddle along the side causes the yak to turn towards that ...

Re: Duckfeet/DaFin comparison (land-based early impressions)

I've relied on the same old pair of "Custom" Model Duck Feet for over 25yr, and suffered off-and-on with the toe-knucks blisters and occasional calf-muscle cramps. I have a wide, size 9.5-10 shoe size, and the Duck Feet are Size Large. It always felt that my toes were being crammed into th...

Thanks Papa, and welcome to the forum. I'm eager to hear more about your paipos. I keep threatening to go finless one session, but having too much fun with fins.

Re: Deathbed Displacement Paiphull

The double deck/single bottom 4oz is the standard shortboard lamination. However, most SB are made of the light/but soft "Red" density PU foam, which is why they dent so badly. I believe that 1.9PCF-2.0PCF eps has about the same density as "Blue" density PU foam. I use Blue desni...

Re: Deathbed Displacement Paiphull

I'm wondering how you guys are measuring flex? My typical belly boards are 43" x 22" by 2.25"", with no stringer, 1.9lb EPS core, and double 4oz E-Cloth deck and single 4oz E-Cloth bottom. There is a little flex in the first 3"-4" of the nose where thickness drops to ab...

Re: T-Belly G3

Caught some clean, shoulder-high beach-break action at the tail-end of the last swell. Reduced fin size to 3.7" side-bites x 4, and altered technique. I realized a week ago that I'd been falling back on old boogie board technique, e.g. setting the rail too hard and putting too much pressure wit...

Re: T-Belly G3

"They are not using 10" tall x 8" base and super raked fins (my guess is the fins are stiff)."
I'm not, either...?? Front Fins = 4.44” Base, 4.55” Depth, Rears = 3.89” Base, 4.37” Depth

Re: T-Belly G3

Typically, fin area is increased as wave size increases. Likewise, fin rake also is increased to produce the drive and projection needed out of turns to keep up with larger, more powerful waves. Additionally, fin stiffness should be increased as wave size increases, and/or as rider size increases. I...

Re: T-Belly G3

No, it was all hindsight. To be honest, I was caught completely off guard by the event. My biggest worry has been lack of hold in larger waves. Never occurred to be that the board could be over-finned. I think fin size is the most likely suspect, but I really want to see what will happen with these ...

Re: T-Belly G3

Finally had a chance to get the TBG3 out in some 6'-7' waves at my local break thanks to Hurricane Simon. I used an S-5 quad set from Shapers (Front Fins = 4.44” Base, 4.55” Depth, Rears = 3.89” Base, 4.37” Depth). The board performed really well, with the exception of some take-offs. On these large...

Re: T-Belly Gen 2 **$279**

Board is perfect. No pressure marks, dings, cracks, etc. Only ridden 3-4 sessions. I recommend 23L of volume for riders your size, but more experience riders can go with less volume. This board is approximately 22-23L. Since this particular board was hand-shaped, I don't have exact volume figures. I...

Re: New Deck Pad from Covepads

I shape my bottom first, getting the rocker I want, and then bring the deck down to the desired thickness. Leave about 1/2" of thickness at the very tip. This will be rounded off, 1/4 round from the bottom and 1/4 round from the deck. On a belly board, I would use a 24"x 3.5" sanding ...

Double-dipping...

I've developed this new approach where I surf my surfboards for a couple of hours, all the while scouting out potential peaks that will work well with my T-Belly. Then, after a brief rest and some nourishment, I grab the TB, my fins and finish off the day with a couple of hours of b-boarding. Today ...

Re: New Deck Pad from Covepads

Very nice! Looks really cool. Great insight about thinking everything through before building. I learned to only reduce thickness to within 1/8" with the power planer. You'll loose at least that much hand-finishing.

Re: T-Belly G3

We've had some pretty good swell this week, with SW groundswell and NW windswell at my local point. A little peaky and downright crossed-up at times, but with 5'-6' faces on set waves. I paddled out on the G3 using the twin-fin set-up that I've come to love in the small stuff, and had difficulty hol...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

Both the G2 and the G3 were purposely designed to maximize planing; they are both "planing hulls", designed to lift or rise up, out of the water as they accelerate. This reduces the amount of bottom surface in contact with the water (wetted surface), thereby reducing drag and concomitantly...

Re: T-Belly G3

One of the advantages of the G3 design is that it can be easily extrapolated to accommodate riders of all sizes. This G3 was built for a rider who was 5-9/240lbs. The board has the same length, but was widened to 23" and thickened throughout (2-3/4" at thickest part). Volume was increased ...
