Re: T-Belly Generation 2

yes, I plan to move them forward, but haven't had a chance to try that out yet. My FCS Fusion boxes have 5-deg of cant and my Bonzer side runners have 19-deg of cant built into the fin. That yields a total of 24-deg of cant, which is typical for Bonzer surfboards. Most fin set-ups benefit from 3-deg...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

I only used the two larger front fins, but I placed them in the rear boxes. So, it was a twin-fin set-up. Tracking on finned surfcraft usually comes from lack of fin toe-in. On the G2, I set the toe-in at 1/8" on both front and rear, again following the Bonzer set-up (but 1/8" instead of 1...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

I fully agree with Rod, that its important to look at the interaction of all design features on any given performance outcome, be it turning, paddling, wave-face-hold, etc and not just one design feature. Wide-tailed single-fin boards don't hold-in as well as narrow-tailed single-fin boards. But, wi...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

Believe it or not, this is the short answer... The density of an object, or weight per measure of volume, e.g. cubic ft, liters, etc, has no bearing on its volume. A liter of air weighs less than a liter of lead because it is less "dense". For our purposes, a 2"x6"x8'redwood boar...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

Shortboards have the bulk of foam behind center and duckdiving is no problem. I have found that nose width, thickness of nose and overall volume of board have more impact on duck diving than center of mass, regardless of board length. A board with a narrow nose will duck dive better than a board wit...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

On his website, Austin advertises that his standard "Paipo" is 4'2" (50") x 20-1/2" x 2-1/2" which Aku determines to be 28 Liters of volume. The G2 is substantially smaller at 3'7" (43") 22-1/2" x 2-3/8" 21 Liters . At 7 Liters less volume, I'm not s...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

Poobah - the concave bottom at the tail is designed to aid the release of water through the tail. Lindsay Lord found that with planing hulls (not displacement hulls) there is a high-pressure area on the bottom, in the back third of the tail while the hull is on plane. Bob Simmons applied this inform...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

Bob - I think all surfcraft need to spend time in the upper third of the wave-face, not just prone craft. This is where the most power is located, power translates into speed, and speed is required to execute most surfcraft maneuvers. (The mistake that I see some surfers make is that they stay at th...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

RIDE REPORT: For its maiden voyage, I took the TBG2 to a local right-point break. This particular wave is known for its long, head-high freight-train rights when the NW Winter ground-swells roll down the California coast. In the spring, Pitas catches the local NW wind-swells, which while lacking the...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

No, actually I hate to arm paddle on a body board. Feels too awkward to me. And I really don't like the feel of "corky" boards either; not in body boards or surfboards. But that's just my personal preference. I couldn't help but notice that the rear 2/3 of the G2 is under water when I'm pa...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

I'll try to keep this brief... 1. Expanded Poly Styrene (EPS) is what many people call "styrofoam" or "beer cooler" foam. The density of EPS is graded by the weight of 1 cubic foot of foam. In other words, 1'x1'x1' block of 1lb eps foam will weigh 1 lb. EPS has a different cell s...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

Actually, Bob, every belly board I have built has been an experiment. This time it was more "premeditated" :D Dims: 43"L 18-1/2" x 22-1/4"@16-3/4" up from tail x 22" Thickness 2-1/8"/2-1/4" (centerline/rail) Tailblock is 18" and nose is about 8"...

T-Belly Generation 2

My name is Thomas Patrick (aka NomasTomas) and I'm a surfcraft builder by trade. While the majority of the surfcraft I build are longboards and "alternative" mid-length shapes, I continuue to be intrigued by belly boards and the challenges they present to designer/shaper/rider. I build no ...

51" Thomas Patrick T-Belly for Sale **SOLD!**

This is the orginal T-Belly I built about 3yrs ago. The owner has moved to Florida and asked me to sell it for him. The board is in excellent condition, with no dings, dents. cracks, etc. The owner had San Diego artist Bryan Helfan (http://www.bryanhelfand.com/) add the kelpy artwork on the bottom. ...

Re: My New Wood Paipo Board

Nice job, JB!! What kind of wood and what did you use to finish it? How much does it weigh? Did you do just an up-rail shape in the nose and down-rail in the tail, or is the nose rail more 50/50? How well does the board turn given its flatness? I found a source for 2"x24"x86" polyuret...

Re: Another "Blast from the past..."

Not sure...one of those questions I forgot to ask. Danny is in his 70s and has a pretty solid shaper/surfer pedigree. Google "Danny Tarampi" and see what you come up with.

Re: Another "Blast from the past..."

Thanks. I saw it as a rare opportunity and didn't want to leave any stone un-turned. Danny, the shaper/glasser was so gracious and patiently answered all of our questions. (Later he wrote Ray, thanking him for the opportunity to see the Hobie Paipo). I was taking notes and shooting photos like crazy...
