Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

This may or not help. It is hard to photo the curve of the wings - they gradually fade out after being more accentuated at the tail. The blue/gray board photo has the level at about 12" from the tail.

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

On the green board, if I put a spirit level on the bottom, from one rail to the other rail, by 20" from the tail the spirit level is flat on the bottom. By 25" from the tail, the wings are completely gone and the spirit shows a small gap around the rails. Double concave to rolled through t...

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

Phil, You may have seen the concave on my boards. I've ridden the green board finless at all sorts of places including JBay and Cloudbreak. The orange wings were retro-fitted to the red board below. While a lot of fun, the red board didn't hold an edge in a tube. Adding the wings made it grip like g...

Re: The Wall Paipo? - Hawaiian paipo board footage.

Robert Moynier pointed me to that great clip. I meant to post it here, but here is my response so far to that very ordinary video on the history of the bodyboard. It is only Hawaiian footage. Minimal text, I just wanted to collate footage (some hard to find/private) that reflected riding the Hawaiia...

Re: fish the movie

Thanks Uncle G, looks like it was a great exhibition. Was this the one Richard Kelvin had something to do with? If not, do you know who put it together?

Re: fish the movie

Nels,

Like Krusher I was commenting on the history of bodyboarding video. A mate and I discussing the Fish video found it interesting, especially the early stuff. Interest only waned near the end.

Re: fish the movie

Krusher,

do you have editing skills or just views on what makes a good video? I'm giving some serious thought about a short video on Hawaiian paipo boards.

Re: fish the movie

I really wanted to see this guy go out at Pipeline and get hammered. As far as a history goes it was really poor. The paipo stuff was woeful, but even bodyboarding history was next to non-existent. Tom Morey was mentioned once in passing. Then there were missed opportunities. They had access to Mark...

I just realized, there are similarities between this board and the patent sought by Georges Hennebutte:

Re: fish the movie

I lost interest toward the end, but agree there is some interesting stuff there. It's hard to tell when they are talking about bellyboards, how these boards were ridden. All the Steve Lis footage is kneeling. Jeff Ching had a Hawaiian background, but he referenced Val Ching riding standup at the Wal...

Re: Finless surfing by John Galera

I've watched this many times.

Dropping with the lip on a big wave is a tough takeoff.

The slide occurs, after the lip hit the wave face above him. Given the wave size, most boards would have had a tough time.

Watch it a few times, the stoke spreads.

I'm no golf player, but did you ever speak to Dermott, the owner of Seasons Lodge that backs onto the golf course?

Re: New board

I recall a wave, a while ago, at a long lined point on my fastest board. The problem wasn't holding a high line on a steep face, it was breaking the high line because of the speed. Putting aside the ability to do more acute turns, finless boards can have two problems. One is the momentary loss of co...

Gday Krusher,

I'm envious. When all is done and dusted, it would be good to catch up and have a wave or two.

Is the cafe/surf shop still open?

Re: And this too shall pass...but not soon enough

I'm pessimistic about when this will end - seems like it is 6 months, but the start of the 6 months keeps changing with talk of tougher restrictions. Non-essential travel is banned, though my idea of essential travel doesn't match the government line. A good time to be living near the coast, though....

If you really want a price Randy Rarick is probably the guy. He's on FB. Did the woman say when he used it in Hawaii? What does the bottom look like?
