Re: Bodyboard Hydrofoil Video
Surfoils is the guy to ask about these. I tried one of the early prototypes and my crook back didn't appreciate it too much. What I found interesting was the footage near the end where there were a couple of bigger waves. On one the ride was clipped, so presumably it wasn't a great ride and on anoth...

Uncle G how does the board go compared to the concave bottom.
Photos I took of boards at Bishop museum. Looked convex to me.

Well done Rod - a lot of effort went on behind the scenes but for the rest of us, it was probably more like - the paipo forum is down.
Like paipo boards, the forum didn't die.

Re: paipo paulownia with rib?
Rather than an external rib, why not just insert two stringers? It involves cutting your board and gluing in two stringers.

Re: paipo paulownia with rib?
Tom Wegener vacuum bags a foam core to paulownia, as do others who make composite boards.
How thick is the paulownia and what method are you using to get the nose rocker?

This may be of interest. Arthur may have other info: https://apluse.de/rs/rs_hist_e.html John is a very helpful guy. Re: River surfing:Setting the record straight.
Uncle G, I did contact the Bishop Museum once but it was through a contact of John Clark. When I went to Oahu a couple of years ago, John organised for me to see the boards, both upstairs and downstairs (which aren't on display) .

Have you asked John himself (he would be the best bet) or contacted the Bishop museum?

Re: New (to me) stuff on Tom Wegener's site
I recently rode the board in 3-4+ waves. It drew a nice line and turned easy enough. It had a lot of flex.

I do the rail grab instinctively (my background is stand-up only) on certain waves, probably more on my backhand (going left). Dropping down a steep face and turning into a tube seem to be when I do it most.

The Indonesian photo suggested that as well but that was also what I was looking for. I could ask about a wider shaper, more curved outline.

Re: New (to me) stuff on Tom Wegener's site
There's nothing particularity strange about a composite design. I had one made by Tom but have only surfed it in very small conditions. I'm planning to surf it over Easter. Mine has a cork deck, wood bottom. BWS-bottom.jpg BWS-deck.jpg BWS_foil.jpg BWS_tailView.jpg I have another composite board tha...

Re: Newport Paipo
Swim fins aren't essential. It will also depend on how much float your board has and weight distribution. Very thin-nosed and finless boards can be difficult without swim fins. They have pros and cons. I f you're not used to wearing them there is a period of conditioning required and finding what su...

Both John Mellor and Surffoils post on Swaylocks, Surffoils sometimes drops by here. He is working on fibreglass flippers, at present. Have you worked this out.
The solution is more in body weight distribution and keeping the rail engaged. This probably happens most in fat waves.

Re: paipo choppy big waves, make it
Hola Asner, I was recently in contact with Larry Goddard who made a distinction between skipping when you are going really fast (like a stone thrown in a lake) bouncing, when riding choppy waves. Combine the two and it is tough. His solution was to not ride windy waves and seek out smooth faces, wit...
