Re: Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Contest
Thanks for the report. Post some pics if you have any! But pls don't use that site where you put your Samoa pics. I can't open any of it - I think a problem with "Flash".

^^ That & expensive editing/post processing software. GoPros are fun, but all the rapid new releases require a continuing investment in computer & software resources to make the most of them. Skeleton Bay is equally mind blowing from the shore or POV perspective. Anyone ever think about moun...

Re: Short paipo video
Dr. Robert: The music is a modified section of "Dirty Blue Gene" from the album "I May Be Hungry But I Sure 'Aint Weird". That album is a little more accessible to me, being a blues fan. Beefheart had some "harp" & quirky blues skills for sure. The original music I ...

Paipo Gathering here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HjRveev2Ws&feature=youtu.be 2nd try. The first one got immediately censored by the greedy record company. Disgusting!! Lets see what happens to this one. Doc: I wasn't the one who mentioned the Thiesz board. Might have been James from up north.

Short paipo video
I put a short video of fairly recent paipo gopro footage on Youtube. Fun waves, but the camera angle was off. I wish I had a chance to film (and surf) more often! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCAHUua4eZ8&feature=youtu.be If anyone's interested, I can put the little bit of paipo footage from la...

Re: Rails
fwiw: My only experience is with plywood boards, and I've found the blade style rails work a lot better if you want to do spins or other bodyboard style moves. Not much difference between square and blade style for just down the line riding. You're pretty dedicated Tartan Jack. I've made the drive f...

Re: Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Contest
It's a shame they don't open up the paipo division. Not like there are hordes of people of any age or size riding paipos, even on O'ahu. Would be fun to watch or enter. I would have to nearly double my size to make the weight class though. Ted: Are you entering the contest or just going over to watch?

Re: My new SDF surfboard Paipo
Sick one Krusher74! I'm surprised you can still surf those spots during that much tide swing. In my area, the average tide range is probably only 3-6 ft, but there are some spots that get really tough to paddle back out at when the tide comes flooding in. There are a lot more spots where it's a cons...

That's a fun looking set up you have over there. You had it mostly to yourself too. What's the water temp there?

Re: varnishes
What brand of varnish are you using? I've heard stories that the low VOC reformulated thinner sold in California doesn't work with the traditional varnish you would get from a boat supply store. I've varnished a bunch of boards with Helmsman Spar Urethane from the hardware store, and it works fine. ...

Re: Central coast Paipo rider (and so-cal)
That's cool james!,I have always wanted to get up and surf under the golden gate for the novelty value, Ocean beach looks good too,I hear its raw! like moss landing. SF OB can be a tough paddle, but it gets really clean & hollow with east or north east winds. We had good days up to Feb, last se...

Re: chalk paint
You mean "chalk board paint"?? I've painted several paipos with leftover paint not really intended for wood like appliance paint & car paint. They all worked as long as I put a good primer coat over the wood first to seal it. I've never used chalk board paint though.

Re: leashes??
A leash on a ply paipo seems more risk than reward. I've never used one. I've been in the same situations trying to find or chase down a paipo, but those are few and far between. Now I understand why bright red was such a popular color for paipos back in the day though. Worst case if I lose a board ...

Re: Fresh One
Thanks. I suspected your board was in the 5 ft range. The board I have now in that style is 5/8" ply; 44" long with a wide point of 17" , and tail at 14.5". The one I made prior was 3/4" ply, with similar overall dimensions. I was inspired by that old Waikiki photo too, alon...

What are the dimensions of that board? That shape/style of board is a lot of fun. I've made a couple of plywood versions.

Re: Saterday project
I've only used spray varnish once, and I couldn't tell if it was being "soaked up " by the wood or bouncing off the board and dissipating in the air when it was sprayed. You would definitely have to do a lot of coats to get the thick built up finish like traditional brush on varnish. I gav...

Re: Saterday project
I wouldn't worry too much about using CDX grade ply. I've made a bunch of boards out of it over the past few years that see regular use/abuse. The majority have held up well, especially if they were epoxied as suggested. My old favorite, made out of recycled (epoxied) CDX held up for 2.5 years in wa...

Anyone know what the design rationale was behind those ultra thick, no-foiled skegs?
