Re: River surfing:Setting the record straight.

I know you are interested in stationary river surfing - but I also know people surfed river tidal bore waves in the 1960's. The first I read of it was Rod Sumpter on the Severn River in the UK in maybe 1968, Surfer Magazine article. They have one in Atlantic Canada too. Possible people in those area...

Re: River surfing:Setting the record straight.

I don't have first-hand knowledge, just memory from media, but maybe it would be of help. There was a trip of bodyboarders to I think the Snake River to ride river waves. I would assume locals had already done this, certainly kayakers. If memory serves Ben Severson was one of the Bodyboarders. Not s...

Re: Paipo Gathering - Sa/Su/Mo, Oct 5-7, 2019 El Capitan SP

Not sure if San Simeon has showers but during the 2013/2015 camp-out the site was overrun and restrooms were trashed by late Saturday afternoon. Sadly...weekends in San Luis Obispo County see a heavy influx of campers from inland SLO and the Central Valley. Full zoo saturation is obtainable. I can'...

Re: Paipo Gathering - Sa/Su/Mo, Oct 5-7, 2019 El Capitan SP

Just general comments here primarily about south of Santa Barbara....California is currently out of drought so many places that didn't have water do now. Have to check parks because many took out things like beach showers if that's important to you; that's the rinse-off showers, not camp showers. So...

Re: Paipo Gathering - Sa/Su/Mo, Oct 5-7, 2019 El Capitan SP

I can't make plans that far out, period. That's a fantastic time for southern California though. Best time of year, IMO. North of Santa Barbara gets a bit sketchy until heart of winter, but there isn't much available south of there above Malibu. Leo Carrillo to the south burned to the ground and I c...

Re: aluminium sheet+ eps/xps board

Aluminum could make a deadly material if dinged into a jagged edge. It also conducts heat so that could be an issue on sunny days, at least for wax retention, if that is an issue. That said, double layers increase weight, although I think it would be very strong. AL comes in various tempers, which a...

Re: hanplane templates ? measures?

I'm kind of getting from the posts that this topic is more about what I think of as "mini paipos" rather than the typical bodysurfing handplane. Having had experience with both I can tell you they are very different. I've built a mini paipo out of wood that worked better than a mini bodybo...

Don't worry about going crazy. You will be in good company.

Posted in 2003 I think...photos are deck-down, looking at the underside of the boards

Re: Everybody wants to

Done...-ish! Final dimensions are 55.5" length, 20.5" at the tail, widepoint is still 22.5" roughly at the widest point. The two surviving fins went in roughly as a mini-simmons placement. No test run yet, need to get through the storm cycles and get the water cleaned up. Wah wah, I k...

Re: Paipo for sale

I've got to have a shoulder replacement surgery (ugh) Sorry to hear that. Don't know if it's on your near horizon but if you get it done let us know how it all goes. I have a family member that may be heading in that direction at some point. Hearing real-life accounts to go with the more clinical o...

Re: Do swim fins generate drag significantly ?

My unscientific observation: If it increases propulsion when kicking in the water, it increases drag when riding.

Options seem to include narrower profile fins like Duck Feet and Vipers, larger board to allow you to pull your feet out of water, or large enough board to arm paddle without fins.

Re: Everybody wants to

Yes...need to let the cosmic vibrations clear up when the air gets that fouled up. I can't bring myself to finish this project when people around me have lost so much. The Malibu coast is pretty much a non-stop Entitlement Expo now, but one needs to be human. Otherwise I guess we'd all just go to Co...

Re: Everybody wants to

An update...basically this is something of a snotty lark of a project, I have no performance aspirations. I'm scratching an itch. The easily recognizable elements will either amuse or anger viewers on the beach, which is fine with me. Just not right now. I'm doing it for a laugh, and things aren't r...

Re: Vinyl Flooring Rolls + xps?

Not trying to hijack the thread...have you considered vinyl and naugahyde? First one is a marine vinyl material...some have a fuzzy material backing but some don't. Commonly used for outdoor furniture and boat upholstery. https://www.onlinefabricstore.net/spradling-heidi-soft-marine-peacock-vinyl-.h...

Re: Vinyl Flooring Rolls + xps?

My first thought is to squeegee it like resin (or spackle). The stuff won't self-level like more fluid resin though.

Re: Everybody wants to

Wow, Nels, I have never seen so many Wavemaster/Wavestorm boards. It is freaking crazy. Ouch. It is like cheapo bodyboards for the masses but now the masses are out in the line-up going every which crazy way. It's nuts where I live and surf, Malibu to Ventura is the home territory. Nobody can say b...

Re: orca fins? other symmetrical fins

Wetsuits are the only other thing where fit is so important. It's tough when you don't have access to multiple fin makes and models. If they don't fit, they don't work...destroy your feet and you are out of the water for weeks or more. I'm lucky, Churchills fit me great, Duck Feet for power. Both re...
