Dale Solomonson

I know that there are a number of people on this forum that have had great experiences with Dale including myself. I finally heard from him last week via email. It turns up that he has suffered another heart attack. He is in cardiac rehab as of now. I debated whether or not to post this, but decided...

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

Ted,
What do you think of the Xylem now that you have had it a month? Of course I am assuming that you have been surfing. :)

Re: Saterday project

Depending on the length and design, I tend to like wider than most I think at 20-22"

Re: Saterday project

My first plypo was a swallowtail. The board looks nice. Just be careful - points can hurt. Now all of my boards are squared tails.

When you come back let's get all the toys out in the water and we can mix it up.

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

Thank's for the breakdown Spudnut. You likely mean top of your head as opposed to "bottom" i.e. chin?

Correct!

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

Watching the video again, looks like length of board is very approximately distance from shoulders to knees... As far as length goes, my 50" x 20" was the length for me from knees to head as I like riding in a bodysurfing style aka superman, width was 40% from Lindsey Lord. If I rode body...

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

Steven, The HPD and my plypos with squared off rails can definitely slip sideways. With the Xylem, I do not know if it is the knife rails, rolled bottom, or the combination of them, but the hold is better than my Austin as a twin and faster. Sam & I were surfing this morning and he was shocked t...

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

Uncle Grumpy,

Do you really have a Primo & Kamado too? Once you go ceramic, there is no turning back. Next we have to create a ceramic paipo . Too much buoyancy won't be a problem here.

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

The board definitely has flatness in the middle. Later today I will see if my son can take pics and post it in here.

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

David, I, just like you, made the switch from riding mats. Paipos definitely feel different. I have never ridden a Wegener, but I have ridden another brand that uses con caves on the bottom. It was way slower than my flat bottom plypos. When it comes to a wood board, I have not ridden anything bette...

Re: Another "Blast from the past..."

Hi Bob,

I think we would be talking in the early 1970's. His shop closed in the later part of the decade. He was really nice to us kids!

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

Glad to hear that your maiden voyage was a success! Since our session swapping boards, I have been riding my Xylem, HPD, and a new plypo I made that is a modified bodyboard template that my son uses. The design works well in plywood, but with Josh's rolled bottom ( that is his boards  ), and k...

Re: Another "Blast from the past..."

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and used to go hang out at Danny's surf shop after school. If I remember correctly, the name of his shop was Guenther Glass.

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

I had Josh make me a 50" x 20" x 1.25" board and have been surfing it a lot the last nine months. First, to compare it to the same board out of 3/8" marine plywood that is dead flat with squared rails. The Xylem has way more float - it is not neutrally buoyant. I put a leash plug...

Very nice looking board. What are the dimensions on it? Is that mostly paulownia wood? Get some more waves this weekend, it is supposed to be picking up!
