Re: Alaia for prone riding

UG,

What do you think the pros & cons of that exact same board would be, only increase the width to 20"?

Alaia for prone riding

My son and I have been really curious about riding an alaia surfboard. We are thinking about a board approx. 5 1/2' long that can be used both for standing and prone. How does a board of that length ride prone (e.g. speed, wave catching ability, duckdiving, turning) when compared to say a 4' board?

Re: bring paipos on planes?

I have a board bag that was made for the HPD. The airlines treated it like a bodyboard and charged me as if it were just another bag.

UG,

Thanks for the links. I just need to make sure I always keep some sandpaper around with this board.

Re: What effect would these changes make?

Interesting! The Home Depot stuff was furniture grade birch. It is too flexy for my likes. This stuff is much more stiff, but still absorbs the bump. If memory serves me right, it is Douglas Fir. Is that a bad wood choice for a paipo?

Re: What effect would these changes make?

I don't know why this board keeps splintering, but it is the closest thing to my ultimate board yet. A day does not go by where at least one person comments about how fast it goes or just what is it and it looks like I am having a blast.

Re: What effect would these changes make?

Does rail come into play very much when we are talking a 1/2" thick board? I just square them off mostly because I have no woodworking tools nor do I know how to use them. Also square rails are fast to make!

Re: What effect would these changes make?

Can nose rocker be put in a board that will reduce pearling, but at the same time not reduce speed or cause a plowing effect?

Re: Austin paipo shared shipping to HI?

Bob,

The .4 ratio was width/length. My board works out to 73.5% of my height.

Ted,

I too apologize for the thread hi-jack!

Skiff,

That board looks insane. Count me in too! In fact, maybe we could get an informal get together one day for the so-cal / central cal area?

Re: Austin paipo shared shipping to HI?

The way that I came up with the dimensions of my current board was interesting: 1) I ride superman style and like to pull my fins out of the water bending my knees to keep my body out of the water while riding to reduce drag and increase speed. So, I got down on my knees and measured to the top of m...

Spoons have a lot in common with boards in this case. I just did the experiment but my spoon was a bit heavy  !

Re: What effect would these changes make?

I too agree, or at least believe, that flat is the fastest when compared to rolled or concave bottoms. I can see where the rolled bottoms would help the board to turn easier. If the ancient boards were around the 100 lb category, then any and all help to turn those boards would be necessary. I am no...

Re: What effect would these changes make?

I asked Josh Klein from Xylem and this was his response: Hey, good to hear from you. I find the rolled bottom helps to hold the board in steeper waves. The water flowing under the board causes a slight suction which happens to pull the board into the wave just enough to keep the rail biting the face...

What effect would these changes make?

My latest board is working awesome for me, but i never stop thinking of things that might make it better. It is made from 1/2" marine ply, no rocker and has square rails ( yeah you can tell how much time I put into this  ). I have checked out Xylem Surfboards and their boards are made out...

Skiff,

Morro Bay is our get away spot we go up to a few times a year. My son and I love surfing up there. Next time we are up that way, maybe you can join us for a session or two! My latest board is 50" x 20" marine ply. It is amazing all of the different designs that can work well.

Re: Come Hell Or High Water - Ventura, Ca

The turnout was huge. There had to be over one thousand people there. Like Keith Malloy said though, most people probably showed up for the free beer. The movie itself was really well done. Mark Cunningham was there as well to do a Q&A session after the movie. When the dvd is released, I will de...

Re: Modifying UDT fins

Bob, When I got my UDT fins, all I did was flex the heck out of them with the blade on the ground and me applying pressure. I did it a lot on both sides of each fin, but I am sure no where near as long as if I modified them. They are incredible since doing that. I surf 3-4 hour sessions all of the t...
