Re: Modifying UDT fins

John Hughes sent a more detailed report on his UDT mods, with some photos, so I put together a small web page:

Stop The Wave

Wilhoite, J. (Director), & Wilhoite, J. (Producer). (1965). Stop the Wave, I Want to Get Off [Motion picture on YouTube.]. USA. This snippet of a film features some paipo boarding at about the 6 minute mark. Thanks to Paul Gross for bringing this one to my attention. See the Videos on the Intern...

Re: Wishbone Board

Without a doubt the discussion of fins seems to get us all going more than board types whatever the reason be. Does anyone else have a preference for a particular fin based upon the board being buoyant like an Austin vs. neutral like an HPD or wood paipo? I tend to think the preferences for fins ha...

Re: Wishbone Board

I am wearing fins in all cases, but that might still be part of the problem. Right now I'm wearing Churchills, but they are tearing my feet a new ass (so to speak). I have some UDTs on order. Hopefully my next surf mission will be a little more comfortable. If you don't have wide feet then you migh...

Re: Posting Picture's Question

The forum software resizes the photo for displaying within the forum posting. The user can click on the image to view the full size. In general it is best not to post super huge images within forum posts because the large image size can distort the entire display of the forum postings and causes loa...

Re: Visit to Hawaii

Rod, It was great surfing with you. You're lucky you got some surf early that week: surf here has been non-existent since then. Next time come two months later when chances for good surf are better. Ted Ted and I both shared our Austin boards (both are RPM model type) with a wahine bodyboarder who ...

Re: Blue Plate Special

This is a place that I surf when it breaks while we are there. The wave is probably a half mile paddle out, at least a quarter mile straight out. The wave pictured is between 10 to 12 foot. You might notice the slight cross shop, or wind swell at an angle perpendicular to the forward motion of the b...

Re: Visit to Hawaii

I didn't really notice much of a difference in water temps between Oahu and the Big Island. Waters on the north shore and the north of the Big Island and Pinetrees (north of Kailua-Kona) were both very clear and clean testing. The waters here are simply cooler than PR and Costa Rica which really sho...

Re: Visit to Hawaii

Hawaii is surprisingly cool compared to many other tropical destinations, e.g., Puerto Rico and Costa Rica. Not chilly, just pleasantly on the cooler side. What you couldn't see were the coatings of SPF45 on my face, ears and neck + those thin hair spots on the coconut. Ted wears a Gath helmet -- no...

Visit to Hawaii

It has been a great trip to Oahu and the Big Island. Tons of surf and little time to conduct paipo research. Have had the good fortune to meet 4 of our fellow riders: Larry Goddard in Waikiki; surfed and talked story with John Clark on the North Shore; Gus Acosta of Wave Arrow paipo boards - he prov...

Re: bring paipos on planes?

Rates and interpretation of what the board/bag is will vary by (1) airline and (2) check-in counter attendant. Hawaiian Airlines checked my bag from Los Angeles to Oahu and on a later flight from Oahu to the Big Island at regular baggage rates, not at the surfboard rate. It is an Austin paipo, 50 x ...

Re: What effect would these changes make?

Square or rounded square should be best because they are already so thin. Any sharper will cause non-recoverable pearls and make turning hard.

Re: What effect would these changes make?

I use a nominal amount of rocker in my boards -- not much because the forward part of the board is also a planning surface. Rail shape is also important in the nose so that the nose automatically wants to slice out for an easier recovery when some pearling occurs.

That is correct -- Larry's Yellow board is a real beast -- for waves under 8 foot!

Re: Austin paipo shared shipping to HI?

Larry's boards range from 18" to 23" wide and are all around 51 to 54" long. The range in width is considerably more significant than the variation in length. The longest of the three boards is the Makaha Missile which also features a rather narrow, highly scooped nose.

SJB, your dimensions are approaching the ideal planning board ratio specified by the design genius, Lindsay Lord: http://mypaipoboards.org/pubs/BookSummaries.shtml#Lord_Lindsay Also see the interview with John Elwell: http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/Paipo_Interviews.shtml#John_Elwell Having said...

Re: Never Stop Enjoying The Simple Things In Life

Is her name "BB" as shown burn written in the nose of the board?

Also interesting to see the board "screwed together" along the periphery. Any more info on that?
