Re: T-Belly Generation 2

Many people think that the original boogie board was somewhat accidental but Tom Morey actually brought some thinking man knowledge to the design. The 42x21 boogies board or 40x20 is the ideal. 50x20 in barely within the range of optimum aspect ratio. . Tom Morey took a USC math degree in 1957, ear...

Re: Paipo rider I met the other day

Concave Vector boards surface fairly regularly, Wedge Vector boards rarely, Stubb Vector and Rick Newcombe models almost never. Great to see photos! Doc (? What's up Doc? You still around?) wrote one of the great descriptions of this genre for the mypaipoboards website; I believe he spoke highly of ...

Re: Cool downs and leg cramps

That's priceless, Bob. Speaking of antics, there was a video of some surf girl twerking before her heats (to the annoyance of many fellow competitors) that was terribly funny. And within months she was in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, probably the best-selling magazine issue in the world ev...

Re: Cool downs and leg cramps

I either laugh or try to choke back my total disgust with people who suit up and prance down to the water and then go into some huge stretching pusedo-yoga routine at the waters edge in the most visible manner possible...especially if followed by a joyful prance out into the surf. It was funnier whe...

Re: uss starship enterprise

Steve Brom, one of what I consider the more meticulous craftspeople in surfboard construction, occasionally puts out some of his well-known fish designs with artwork that makes them look sun-browned, ding-repaired, and wasted. Brand new boards. Absolutely beautiful in their insincerity. Ugly boards ...

Re: Soft Top Mega Platter

Any idea how he sealed the cut? Or what might work in that regard? That looks a bit ragged but the whole idea is kind of fun. CBC boards are $$$ for what you get but there are a lot of cheap foamies floating around used that could stand "improvement". I've always wanted to have something I...

Re: My first build

The Minwax poly has always worked for me, pretty bombproof. Thin ply edges can be sealed with various epoxy based compounds if extreme longevity is required. I'm with Poobah on the brush issue...you can wrap a brush with plastic wrap and get another day out of it, maybe more if you're careful, but w...

Re: Asymmetrical vs Symmetrical swim fins

Churchill Slashers are the best-fitting, most comfortable fins I've ever used...alas, they have little power. The somewhat reviled regular Churchill Makapuu fins...always were comfortable on me and had significantly more power than the Slashers. Somewhere in my files I have an article or ad material...

Re: Skimboard Paipo

Hi Bob For skimboards you get a variety of choice, although I'm not sure what will be available wherever you will be in Canada. I am told that B.C. has some level of established skimboard community in places but I can't verify that. Victoria Skimboards out of Laguna Beach ships all over the world an...

Re: swim fins - DaFin

Update on silicone spray: I keep my Duck Feet in my truck most of the time, in the back under a camper shell/canopy. Out of direct sunlight but subject to heat and cold. We've had weeks of warm and extremely low humidity (5-10%) weather. Ducks are maybe 3-4 years old. They were recently used but I h...

Re: swim fins - DaFin

Applying minimal amounts of silicon was recommended to me as a way to preserve fins. haven't tried it as yet as I need to get to a camera store to buy it. Bob - Try hardware or DIY stores. I think what they are talking about is silicone spray- basically a lubricant, but my bottle says for sports eq...

Re: Collectors!

Good eye Rod. I didn't notice the second line of photos until reviewing late last night, remember thinking it was very Wegener/Seaglass looking.

I guess the Baldwin interview is something that really needs to happen...sounds like he could shed major light on that significant company.

Re: Collectors!

Well, it looks "home made" to me...and at one point El Paipo stickers were available. That said, everything starts somewhere...I wish my first foam and fiberglass attempt looked that good. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have come from the 1950's and I don't know when the company started...so ...

Here's a good link: http://www.ebodyboarding.com/acess/Fin-Tethers The shoestring/cord looking things are very Hawaiian style but they've never looked comfortable to me, so I never used any. I've used the Morey Churchill style and those are fine (see also Bully's and Hydro on that page). The only ki...

Here's another that's floated up and off a time or two:

If money was no object, it would be a blast to ride them a couple of times and then hang them on a wall.

Re: pronoparadiso - Aus thing Oct 5

Notice I said "former haunts" ;) ...most of the places I spent most of my earlier surfing time on are now cesspools of surf species feces , ill-bred and ill-mannered humans who from a growing distance seem intent on creating a picture of Malibu in 1954 with them being heros and legends. A ...

Re: pronoparadiso - Aus thing Oct 5

I think the video and maybe the event...espouses what I consider a disconnect from contemporary surf culture ( "surf culture" - ). Apparently the event was on the Gold Coast of OZ...it's been decades since I've been to Queensland but that has to be a pressure-cooker in the water now...

Re: passing this on

$400 is a big price drop over where that board was when I first saw it. Big. If it's from the Bay area that might explain what must have been a monster original price.

Re: Another surfing history book.

My local library got it first thing and I guess I was lucky - picked it off display. Authors are UCSB profs, surfers. I don't remember any paipo content, maybe just mention of prone riding historically. Some of the stuff about the 60's era was interesting from observational POV. Also effects of prof...
