Re: Bottom Shapes Of Simple Wood Paipos
Uncle, Compared to the HPD, the Malama Kai allows much easier turning and top to bottom surfing. Speed is hard to judge as I never have both boards in the water at the same time. On my recent trip with the MK to Samoa, I found my inside hip dragging in the water when the wave started to throw - good...

Re: Two Crows Belly Board
The low volume and dished deck look attractive to me. Rod's 2" sidebites with 4" center work great on the Austin, but after riding a finless board for a while, I wonder how much fin is needed.

Re: Bottom Shapes Of Simple Wood Paipos
I gotta bring the Malama Kai with rolled bottom (and top) for you to ride. It seems pretty fast to me, but I have only ridden HPD and foam boards.

Re: Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Contest
I talked to some of the guys in the water. Most of the guys were entered in multiple divisions and were either in the water or scattered up and down the beach. The contest was informal and had a family atmosphere. (See my Samoa report.)

Samoa report
I just returned from Samoa with the 50" Austin and 47" Malama Kai. The surf was small, clean and peaky the first week. I did manage to get barreled on my very first ride with the Austin - a quick backdoor blast through what I assumed would be a closeout section. I can't say I knew much abo...

Re: Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Contest
The paipo divsion ran yesterday in chest high surf with 20-25 mph offshore wind. I finished 7th of 7 in my heat! Actually, I was lucky to get two waves and score at all. Most of the the guys rode small boards kickboard style and took off roll-in style next to the peak. I can tell you that paddling a...

Re: Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Contest
I'm gonna wear the helmet cam during my heats and shoot stills from the beach. If I get knocked out early, I'll swim with the Go Pro for impact zone video.

Soulglider,
I would really like to ride one of your boards. I will be in Southern California this summer.

Re: An unusual (?) surf injury
Spud, I did wonder if the dishing of the HPD deck would lessen the potential to load the thumb, since the rail, though thin, is relatively more prominent. My Paulownia project board is going to have the same plan shape and bottom contour as the Malama Kai, but the top is going to be dished to move v...

Re: An unusual (?) surf injury
SJB, I was wearing my helmet and two mm top. I heard the board smack the helmet several times as we communed at the bottom of the sea. The worst thing is that the tripod mounted camcorder didn't record anything, since I forgot to push the red button in my haste to get in the water. Pilot error on bo...

An unusual (?) surf injury
I got worked this afternoon in some big surf with the Malama Kai. I attempted to duck dive under a crushing lip, but was sucked up, flipped on my back and bounced against reef. As I (on my back, pinned to the reef) held onto the board with hands on the rails in usual duck dive position, the turbulen...

Re: 47" Malama Kai test ride video
Bob,
That wave varies quite a bit as a function of tide, swell size and direction. The ride is never long, as rocks loom inside. Tomorrow promises bigger swell and lower morning tide that will make a more challenging ride.

Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Contest
This year will run 14 events over five days of surfing, starting with the Presidents’ Day Weekend, Feb.16, 17 and 18 and, with surf permitting, ending up Feb. 23 and 24th. The award ceremony will close out the Classic during the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 24. Bunky says the Paipo division will likely...

Re: 47" Malama Kai test ride video
Was a fifteen foot Tiger Shark at Kiholo Bay - not too far from the video site. The surfer was paddling in at dusk when the shark grabbed his forearm. After a couple hammer blows from the free arm, the shark let go and had a nibble at a knee. The guy continued paddling in to his buddies on the beach...

47" Malama Kai test ride video
I finally got the Malama Kai out in some decent surf. The board duck dives almost as well as the HPD and rides like the Austin 50".
