Re: Humboldt surfer

These guys do look they're having fun. I prefer surfing with a few friends in crappy conditions to surfing with a crowd of bozos with good conditions. (I do have a bizarre fondness for rocks, sketchy water entries and remote spots far from rescue.)

Re: Ziffy Board

Irving Ziff was a tennis buddy of my parents. I remember him charging the net to hit backhand volleys with the forehand side of the racket (like Danny Seemiller playing table tennis). Nice guy. His company was called Ziffco. The Ziffy board is hollow with a removable plug in the back. The plastic is...

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

Sadly, I have done very little surfing this last month - only one day on the 50" Austin in Waipio and one day in tiny surf with Austin 50" and Malama Kai 47". The Malama Kai is going to get an O'fishl deck mount leash anchor with carbon fiber overlay at Christmas, and both Austins plu...

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

Geoffrey, I am 5'-7". My go-to Austin is 50" and the Xylem is 47". The square tail and relatively straight plan of the Xylem allow most of the 47" length to be effective as an edge. Ron, I'll bet you'll find the Austin 50" to be completely different as a thruster with 2"...

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

I haven't ridden the Malama Kai in really good surf yet, so my opinion is half-baked. The Austin 50" thruster setup is great in most surf and makes me confident in crowds. The Malama Kai, with a leash, will probably do almost everything the Austin does. If I had to pick right now, I'd pick the ...

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

Here is video of yesterday's go out in small surf with the Xylem and the Austin. (I start on the Xylem, swap to Austin mid way, swap back at the end.) The video session ran an hour without a set wave. Next time we are going to jump in earlier. Swapping boards in the water yesterday in small surf mad...

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

I was thinking a 47" x 19.5" x 1.5" Austin would fit in my bag. Perhaps a 50" x 19.5" by 1.5" Austin with the front 3" chopped off flat would work. My 50" is beat up enough that I might hack off the nose! The 44" Austin and 47" Xylem have perfect buo...

Re: Xylem Malama Kai paipo

I just got back from a test surf on the Xylem. At 47 x 19.5 x 1.25, the Xylem has near perfect buoyancy: easy takeoffs, easy duckdiving, and enough float to sit on. The rearward buoyancy makes it easy to paddle with surf style or bodyboard style without sinking. I tried several styles of takeoff pad...

Xylem Malama Kai paipo

I've got one of Josh's Paulownia boards on the way. 47" by 20" by 1.25" with rolled bottom and knife edges. It should be almost as buoyant as my 50" Austin.

Re: Paipo Gathering in San Simeon Aug 3-5, 2012

I surfed with Ron and his son Sam this morning in Ventura. We had some fun size waves and good wind conditions from 8 to 11 am. Ron's 50" x 20" x 1.25" paulownia paipo with knife edges and rolled bottom is fun to ride: easy paddling and takeoffs; very good down the line speed; and goo...

Re: Paipo Gathering in San Simeon Aug 3-5, 2012

Just got back from Pilates. My trainer worked me over good. She hurt me bad - I mean good. I'm gonna head up to Ron's before dawn Friday. There may be surf from SSW. Perhaps you guys should make the bee-yootiful drive down here. Just as scenic with the ocean on the right. (Especially the section of ...

Re: Paipo Gathering in San Simeon Aug 3-5, 2012

Have wetsuit, will travel. Got a Cypher 4/3 for 30% off. These new fangled wetsuits are really stretchy and have unusual closure mechanisms. Seems really warm - especially after wrestling with it in the dressing room. (The salesgirl had to unzip me as I was too tired after trying on four suits.) Any...

Re: New Paipo Website

It is a nice looking home page. The eye candy will be attractive to many, but this site will remain the leading source for useful, useless and usually topical information. For paipo™, any publicity is probably good publicity. Perhaps there will be more pretty girls bothering me at the beach now. Ted™
