Re: Paipo Gathering - Fall 2015?
I'm just going to concentrate on this palooza, not ready to commit to anything further. If we lock in on Ocean Mesa, I'm bringing a trailer and camping in that. And along those lines..................they do offer 'rent a trailer' that you can have 'delivered' right into a site, and then just start ...

Re: Paipo Gathering - Fall 2015?
OK, here's maybe a way to shortcut our way to success? RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from El Cap is a privately owned RV park called Ocean Mesa. I've been staying there for years, and it's unbelievably luxurious. It has an insane pool, super nice facilities with ultra clean showers, restrooms, a small wel...

Re: Paipo Gathering - Fall 2015?
Well, nobody certainly has a Crystal Ball 'this' far out? And yes, with this El Nino thing and the predicted heavy rains, an earlier date might indeed be the prudent move. The difficulty is always going to be: do we go to a location that PICKS UP SWELL, which might then be overloaded if we get any '...

Re: Paipo Gathering - Fall 2015?
This year could be a wild one, but I'm in and my vote is for.........................EL CAPITAN STATE PARK. This is a GREAT wave for all manner of paipo or alternative belly devices, excellent camping, easy to access, and close to a city if anybody needs anything (*though it won't feel that way when...

Re: More Mega Platters
I use the thicker one. In between sets, my usual position to 'rest' on my board is to have the board kind of sideways to the surf, with my elbows splayed out and myself stretched out to the side. The thicker material is SUPER COMFORTABLE, and I've really come to love it.

Re: More Mega Platters
Yes, I'd never really visited that area before, but I was out there a few months ago and the setup is mind blowing.... Lots of high quality reef and point breaks, all condensed into a relatively small area, with incredible 'small town' positive vibes and a great local surfing culture. This board is ...

More Mega Platters
My buddy Tony is about to take delivery of a new eps/epoxy, 6'3" x 29" Mega Platter. Tony resides in the cold, (*currently snowed in/under...) New England, but Spring is close and he's surrounded by high quality right and left point breaks, so I think this is going to get a good solid Maid...

Re: bellyboard for BIG guy
The double concaves are really just acting as 'twin engines' for these types of boards? Concaves generate LIFT, and often, lift generates speed. The concept on the twin concaves is that when you turn the board over on a rail, basically, only half of your board is in the water, correct? If you had on...

Re: bellyboard for BIG guy
Noma, Your boards and what I'm riding are actually very similar. The 'platter' concept has two huge, deep double concaves running through the rear of the board, with a deep 'vee' between them. This vee is pronounced and allows a board this wide to be turned much more effectively going rail to rail. ...

Re: bellyboard for BIG guy
Sam wasn't wearing any for this, he just jumped in for a quick 30 minute session and didn't wear any. That's just him................for me? I wouldn't consider not wearing my Da Fins, from my 'research', they're an integral part of the whole experience. The boards have tremendous floatation (73 lit...

Re: bellyboard for BIG guy
Yep, that was indeed a 'walk in', no need for the boat this day. NWS had been calling for extreme south winds, so we determined that using shoe leather might be a better call than bobbing around in a toy boat. Guys that were out with us had also been out over the weekend, and reported that it was dy...

Re: bellyboard for BIG guy
Here's a few photos of some mischief we got into yesterday... the blue 'swirl' board is 5' 6" by 26" wide, wooden 'fish' fins. The yellow bottomed device is my 6'3" by 29" quad finn'ed Platter. We caught a rare pointbreak here in our area, and the crowd was manageable and the las...

Re: bellyboard for BIG guy
Gorilla- Us big boys have to stick together! Yes, my boards are outrageously sized, but over the years, I've found many advantages to this sort of template as opposed to the smaller ones. It's all personal opinion I realize. Mine are 6-3 x 29" wide. If something like this interests you, email m...

Re: Cool downs and leg cramps
When I first got into this paipo thing, my lifetime kneeboard buddies all said the same thing, 'Get ready for leg cramps'. They reported that even lifelong kneelboarders have issues with cramping, but there are some things they said they work into their routine, and I've done a lot of reading to try...

Re: Platter Love
Bob- It was funny, in what has turned out to be the 'usual' for us, we had a lot of very different boards and 'approaches' on the boat for the day. Onboard and FULLY discussed and analyzed: a custom 9-6 Bob Pearson PU SUP, a 9-0 perimeter stringer'ed EPS/epoxy Jed Noll longboard, a Fourth Gear Flyer...

Re: Platter Love
Bob- Sorry, but I don't have that dimension right in front of me here? But the designer/shaper has it all stored in his computer, so it'll be easy to reference when I contact him to do the next one. I'd have never thought that tail rocker would have ended up being such an important singular dimensio...

Super fun day for me what with everyone trying out the two boards and giving me their honest and savvy opinions on 'em. Photos? Here's the last of it-
