Re: Sectional Board for travel

The key question is, will this Beater make a good paipo? Has anyone tried it as a prone board? You can ride these kinds of boards prone, but I find them awkward compared to a regular boogie due to the shape and increased length & thickness. If you're using swim fins, these boards are fun as a k...

Re: rail shape

FWIW, I made a wood board (pine & redwood) of similar dimensions last year http://mypaipoboards.org/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=324 and put roughly 80 /20 rails on it. I attached a pic of the bottom of the board & rail. My board isn't long or floaty enough for me to do stand up rides, but...

Re: HPD Flex Paipos - Small

@ Airboy808 I'll try to let you know next time I'm back on O'ahu. I still live in the Bay Area, but I try to visit the islands a couple times a year. I grew up surfing Base & the rest of the Windward side. Good times, and a few leash-less ply paipos were definitely ridden on Base in those days.

Re: HPD Flex Paipos - Small

Thanks for all the test ride reports. Do you know if the new XP board has some flex in it? Eastside is getting some trade wind swell right now, hopefully you can get some test rides on that. Speaking of the Eastside, I saw in one of your earlier posts you rode your paipo on Base. You have a leash on...

2014 Buffalo's Big Board paipo comp-anyone go this year?

I was on O'ahu during both weekends but was busy with family stuff. Missed the Pipe bodyboard comp too. Anyone on here enter or check out the paipo comp in the Buffalo contest? I got to paipo Makaha once during the work week. It was a very inconsistent 4 ft Hawaiian on sets, but with a slight onshor...

Re: Paipo rider I met the other day

I think I've seen that guy out at the north end of OB in the past. I've ridden paipo north of the GG bridge solo a few times. Same situation south of the bridge. There's a few guys who ride paipo around, but I've only had 1 experience where 2 of us were surfing the same spot at the same time.

Yeah, def let me know when you're coming up to surf OBSF. This week looks like only short period wind swell, but it might turn offshore for a day or two around Thurs.

Re: Board Build Pictures

Hope you got some before the winds switched. Thanksgiving over indulgence & woke up too late today. I saw light offshores on the wind report and was about ready to make the drive. By the time I finished my coffee, the report was showing 10-12mph onshores. It's been fun in SF. Let me know next ti...

Re: HPD Flex Paipos - Small

^^ Don't forget the clothes iron with some wax paper as a sealing /shaping tool and some contact cement. I did a lot of modifications to stock bodyboards back in the day. The 80's - early 90's boards tended to fall apart fast or just plain didn't work, so there was a lot of raw material laying aroun...

Re: Wavejet bodyboard

Yeah, it's a great thing for people with disabilities like Jess Billauer. However, for the able bodied masses, it will just be another crutch used by people of mediocre skill to try and cheat their way into waves ahead of the traditional arm paddlers and leg kickers. I wouldn't mind trying one just ...

Re: Finless or Not?

I went back and read the 1st post. Ok, I would assert that a finless prone board is just as capable as a prone board with fins when you're talking about boards of comparable overall dimensions, and 4ft or under in length. I'd go so far as to say the finless board has an edge in that comparison. Once...

Re: Finless or Not?

You can easily go on and off the "brakes" by just shifting forward and lifting you legs on a shorter, skegless board. The best visual example of this technique is bodyboarder Jeff Hubbard's riding style, watch the wave around 3:10:

Re: Finless or Not?

To me, the thing that makes (traditional finless wood) paipo riding unique, challenging, and a hell of a lot of fun is the fact that the boards slide. I think the most fun I have riding paipo is using the old skool style where you're well forward on the board, legs / fins lifted out of the water and...

Re: Any Hints for Go Pro Camera on a Paipo?

On a thin wood paipo, the camera is too low nose mounted. Raising it up on wood blocks helps a little. Nose mount shots look ok on a bodyboard, and it might work for your super thick foam & glass boards. The best prone footage I've seen comes from pole mounts on the tail, or a back mount harness...

alaia style paipo

Messed around this past weekend and made an alaia style board out of some curb find shelf boards and a piece of an old garden trellis. The board is 64" L , 18.75" W, 14" tail, and 3/4" thick. My take on the board in the famous "alaia guy at Waikiki" photo. I made some s...

Re: Old Santa Cruz bellyboard

So... what was the influence behind that style of board shape? An ironing board or a casket lid? Although the Santa Cruz board is literally a re-purposed ironing board, there are several boards in that style being surfed in that 1947 California video I posted that look like they're in the 8 - 12 ft ...

Video -California surfing in 1947

Mostly solid wood stand up riding in this, but there's wood paipo / belly board riding, bodysurfing, and mat riding at the beginning. Also a segment on making redwood & balsa boards. Surprised to see a lot of people using (swim) fins that early.

I found a short compilation vid of this years contest. There's a segment of a paipo rider pulling a rollo. Anyone know of links to other vids or photos from this year? Looked like really fun conditions.
