Ted met this paipo surfer at one of the Big Island breaks the other day, shot a couple of pics of his board and asked me to post them.
Notch tail, wooden board. The board is actually wood skin over foam core.

Re: The next big thing
All around the article does well until it crumbles into some of the all too customary characterizations, "... a special emotional moment for all that had Chris quietly pondering whether he could have been a stand-up surfer after all." "... the first surfcraft for many, and a developme...

Re: The next big thing
I tend to agree about not seeing a need to "popularize" anymore surf riding -- it is already crowded enough!!! Did enjoy skimming the article on the flight down to PR. Will look it over closer and post to the website in a couple of days... when the surf in Puerto Rico goes for flat for a f...

Re: Oahu
Oahu probably has been all-around swell exposure and even some nooks and crannies on the trade winds exposed East side. There is a reason the North Shore is called the 7-Mile or 13-Mile Miracle. Granted, my experience is limited to Oahu and the Big Island, but it is based upon what I have heard over...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market
Jim, I have not been seeing common references to the term "bellyboard" prior to the early- to mid-1960s. Please sent me some references! Look at your own site and especially surf research au. The different prone machines going back a century are referred to in many of the listings (among ...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market
Words and their meanings change with time and location. <snip> Very much so. It is somewhat challenging to read Hawaiian pre-1920s texts (books, newspapers, journals, songs, etc.) and know for sure what is being discussed: swimming, body surfing, prone board riding or foot board riding. The challen...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market
There are several references to body-board surfing in Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand and elsewhere in Oceania. [See: Finney, Ben R. 1959. Hawaiian surfing, a study of cultural change. ] Just as I predicted. Some obscure reference in a book no one has read. The fact of the matter is "bellyboard&qu...

Rod, Thanks. A Cool hand Luke moment. I can see them at the bottom of the interviews. This one got me intrigued: Serious Fun Riversurfing Activities & Tours in Queenstown Bodyboard down the Mighty Kawarau River with the inventors and pioneers of riversurfing, 'blowing minds since 89'. Learn how...

Re: Holiday Fundraiser Help
I may not have it installed, that's why I asked whether there was some other way ads could be hidden. While I should wear glasses more often, it would need to be an extremely small ad for me to miss it. Bob Bob, the adverts are at the bottom of the web pages -- none are on the forums. You will see ...

Ok, for the dummies. How to disable adblock just for this page? Bob You should be able to turn adblock off with the click of a button and then refresh the page. There are not any Google adverts on the forums -- they are on the web pages and usually out of the way at the bottom of the page. Thanks!

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market
Sorry, but the term bodyboard pre-dates the invention of the boogie board by Tom Morey in 1971. Bullshit. I've been surfing since the 1950's and nobody used the term before the the boogie boom despite what authorities whom you might have talked to might have "recalled." And even if some d...

Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market
Bodyboards include all manner of surf riding craft intended to be ridden prone. Bodyboard is a term invented by the marketing droids of the "action sports industry" to describe their knock offs (and improvements) of the Morey boogieboard. Bodyboard = booger. Period. Sorry, but the term bo...

Holiday Greetings
A belated Merry Christmas and Holidays and a super New Surfing Year to all in our kipapa -style surf riding community! Re: Are there any Commercial Paipos available on the market
To me, I have used 3 categories of prone vehicles: 1) bodyboard - sponge 2) bellyboard - foam & glass; buoyant 3) paipo - neutrally buoyant board that is not a sponge or mini surfboard There are somethings that are simply overcome by events. In the UK they call their wood boards "bellyboar...

I keep seeing down on the bottom of the web page for "users online" Google[bot] and Yahoo[Bot] wtf is that? Those are the "bots" that scan the Internet for data that shows up in Internet searches. The paipo forum pages are open to see by unregistered used, including bots, but yo...

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards
For the most part the people on this forum would concur with your overall premise, Deathbed (re-named to his longtime profile, Soulglider). Sometimes it is fun to knicker down and try to define or understand things - it is part of our (paipo) heritage. It is also a sound reason to use the long time,...
