Looks like it was fun event. Post more pics if you have 'em. Found a news story about it & a blog with some decent riding pics:

Re: Vintage Paipo Trophies
I don't have any photos. The bowl is stored away somewhere at my parents' house (I hope). It was from the Makapu'u Bodysurfing Classic around '83; boys bodysurfing division. I don't know have a list of the finalists. I remember the top prize for the paipo division was an HPD board, and I think you c...

Re: Vintage Paipo Trophies
I remember the guy whose name is on the koa bowl as a really good bodysurfer. Koa bowls were pretty common trophies at surf contests in Hawai'i when I was growing up, at least up to the mid-80's when koa wood became too expensive & scarce. I don't know how far back the tradition goes. I have a b...

Re: Paipo Gathering in San Simeon Aug 3-5, 2012
What's up guys. Anyone cruising down to San Simeon from the Oakland/EastBay area or points north; and would you have space for a passenger & some ply paipos?? Will throw in gas money, beer (or beverage of your choice), and maybe even a ply paipo if you do. Let me know.

Yeah, looks a lot like a promotional vehicle for the commercial guys. But if it gets more people riding paipos, it's not all bad.

Re: new boards
Nice boards Mike. I saw a kid with a paipo shaped & stained like the one in the 3rd pic, but scaled down to kickboard size, this past weekend at Sandys on O'ahu. Good to see that some of the younger generation are still into paipos.

Patent site
This might be old news to the historical & design gurus on here, but I chanced on this page on a patent site that could be of interest to some. Opening the links to the various patents will take you to additional patent links with all kinds of paipo, bodyboarding, and bodysurfing related stuff. ...

Re: Help me pick boards out of this wood
I'd say 15-16" wide is fine, unless you're an xl + size person or like to ride with both elbows down on the deck at all times. Some of my ply boards are in that width range. I know there are several varieties of paulownia. I've read the wood from the ornamental type tree is more suited to makin...

Re: Help me pick boards out of this wood
I've never worked with paulownia before, but if I had your slab, I'd start at the thick end and cut it at 42" - 44" . I'd take advantage of the gradual thinning of the wood, and use the thin end for either the nose or tail. The remaining 1/2" - 5/8" piece could be used for a shor...

A few boards from free plywood
I scored a free partial sheet of 5/8" t & g plywood this past fall and made a couple boards out of it. The board in the foreground is a copy of one I made out of 3/4" ply a couple years ago. I was able to get the other 2 narrower boards out of the remaining piece. Lengths are 43 -44&qu...

Re: Saterday project
Whatever that wood was, it was cheap - less than $13 for a half sheet and didn't smell like regular fir tree plywood when cut. That's the only time I ever had to pay for wood for a paipo. I keep finding free pile / free Craigslist plywood locally, so there hasn't been the need to pay the hardware st...

Re: Saterday project
Thanks for the info about the plywood Uncle, but now I'm confused. I used this piece of what looks like birch ply, from a local hardware store on O'ahu, to make a paipo when I stayed there for a month. PICT5872b.jpg The finished board is barely sealed with 2 coats of spray can varnish ( one coat was...

Re: Renting Boards
I don't think you could find a rental paipo or alaia even in Hawai'i. I've never had much luck trying to prone ride a surfboard, either intentionally or unintentionally. Funny, I just saw a guy at Full Point (O'ahu) a few weeks ago trying to ride a grom sized surfboard paipo style. He was at the lea...

Re: Paipo boards on Liquid Salt magazine
That's an interesting story and background (in the "credit" thread)Glider; helps explain all the surf media publicity about that paipo maker. I always have to shake my head when I see the prices being charged and apparently paid on the paipos & handboards marketed to the hipster crowd....

Re: Building A Paipo
On my board that I epoxied, I went heavier on the deck than the bottom. Over time, the board developed the unfortunate tendency to heavily reverse flex when the board was under stress, and at the worst possible moment. Got over a year of good use from the board before it started doing that though. T...

Re: Credit where credit is due (rant).
Good topic. I credit a bunch of mostly unknown paipo riders that I would see ripping on the south & east shores of O'ahu when I was a kid for getting me started. Also the Hawai'i DOE for offering woodshop class in school, and providing the materials & tools to make my first paipo. Last but n...

Re: Something different or not?
Yeah, around $200 for a half sheet; but considering how much people pay for bodyboards or custom foam/glass paipos these days, that's not too bad. If I'm reading the tech data on the Starboard correctly, it appears that it's not as rigid, nor does it have the same flex strength as plywood, but it's ...
