Re: Rick Surfboards Paipo

Yes, drilling a hole was all so common in the early days. No simple leash plugs although some people made fiberglass loops on the board. It was easier to hold on to a paipo then a longboard or a short boart (7'6") back then so it open up some breaks that foot surfers would want to avoid. We als...

Re: orca fins? other symmetrical fins

As you may have discovered it is now possible to drag and drop an image directly into the "Reply" or "Post" space from one's computer. However, I wasn't able to directly drop and drag the photo below into the post. It was easy to copy and paste the photo's link into the Attachmen...

New Upgrade, New Feature Added

Upgraded a long overdue upgrade to the forum software which was prompted by a need to upgrade the supported php scripting language the forum uses. Sometimes this process is as difficult as catching a wave with an anchor stuck to a reef. Now the little feature add-on... posts in a thread are now numb...

Rick Surfboards Paipo

This is an interesting board for the period which is my guess a mid-1960s vintage. I came across it on eBay. The board is 42 x 21-1/2 inches. Rick Stoner early on partnered with Bing Copeland who was also known for supporting innovative surf designs. Deck_stdg.jpg Bottom_stdg.jpg BottomSideAngledVie...

Re: New Blank

Plenty to work with... maybe too much rocker for my tastes but part of that could be mitigated by turning the board around before making cut lines.

Re: Does it sound like a good paipo ?

Looks nice to me. It is all up to you now! As Bob said, width is a matter of preference and at 21 inches is in good range of the other dimensions. My preference would be to probably slap on some smaller fins but see how it goes and try some other fins if there is something else you are looking for i...

Honestly, those are the conditions I usually take my finless wood board out in.

LOL, steam bending it might have broke the scrap ply you had! A foot wide seems SO narrow.

Re: Cornwall style board

It sure looked purty, but to be a true Cornwaller Bellyboard it needs a good sized nose flip.

Poobah, long time! Wondered if the fires and smoke in N. California had swept you away. Any water time as of late?

Re: yucca fins

The Yuccas are expensive, probably about double of Vipers and DaFins, and they are also heavy along the lines of Viper 5" Orange and Yellow Dot models and DaFins are about half the weight, a big factor for anyone that travels and needs a spare pair.

Re: TBG5

On the nose thickness it is also the rail shape. I always shoot for the airplane wing leading edge which tends to lift out of the water during minor pearls and through shop. Nose kick doesn't really help much in a nose pearl other than slow and slosh the board down. Some nose kick does help in steep...

Re: TBG5

Bob, I might be confused on whether you are speaking of a wider, fuller nose plan shape or a thinner, less thick nose area. Photographs and angles can trick the eye... the nose appears narrow with nose kick. I would likely keep the thickness as it appears but go with a fuller plan shape in the nose ...

Re: Dextra Bellyboards

Somebody in the family re-initiated the branding in 2020, including a web page http://dextrasurf.com/, a Facebook page and an Instagram page. However, the website has since gone dead. I did a partial check on the Wayback Machine and as of the latest update in August 2020, the website remained incomp...

Combination of a surf mat and modern bodyboard! They were so floppy riding Waimea they scooted through the cross-chops like mats.

Re: Quad Concave Body Board Study

Keep in mind that Lindsay Lord's tests demonstrated the 2:1 aspect ratio excelling in the flats, i.e., having the least drag resistance, and one might see this while riding straight down from the crest to the bottom of a wave. The concave boards principally gain their best performance in riding the ...
