Re: California Surfcraft Bodypo Review

Not recently, but I will be soon :D Just made this from one of Dave's blanks - 44" x 19.5" x 5/8" at the rails; 17 1/8" at the tail , 60/40 bodyboard style rails, and just under 5lbs. IMAG1583.jpg IMAG1581.jpg The shape is a cross between my favorite bodyboard and paipo. I left t...

Re: Wave invader

Funny, the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the name "Wave Invader" was the infamous "Bedroom Intruder" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEAKsaQOCpQ Not a very wise product name for any kind of bodyboard, or any "new" type of surfcraft for that matter. The sha...

Re: My lates Wing board

Yeah, I really wish there was more visual documentation on prone foil boards so I could wrap my head around the concept. Not just of people riding decent waves, but how they handle the paddle outs and take offs too. I've seen Wooddaves? videos. Looks like he's getting some speed/momentum advantage i...

California Surfcraft Bodypo Review

Bodypo inventor Dave Hahn gave me the opportunity to test ride some of his boards at OBSF this past weekend. The boards we picked for the test were both 42" long slimmed down bodyboard style shapes with max widths of 19.5". One board had a bat tail, the other a crescent. Bodypos have a dis...

Re: california surfcrafts (cork boards)

What do you think of the idea of selling blanks? Would you be interested in that? Of course you'd probably want to see them first, but at least in theory? I'd be interested in that. There's a long tradition of building your own that goes with paipos. Can you confirm that the max width of the blanks...

Wow... so much wisdom in that letter from John Kelly. Everything you need to know about Hawaiian style paipos is right there. I'll always regret not taking up the invitation to go over to his house to learn about surfing history back when I was in college.

Re: california surfcrafts (cork boards)

I've seen the maker of those bodypos in the water a few times on his handboards. I'll hit him up for test ride if I see him again. I'm curious as to how much float the bodypo has,and how much stiffness vs flex. Interesting concept.

Re: Bag Surfing Article at UK Mat Surfers

Haha, classic!! I remember seeing bag surfing at Makapu'u when I was a kid. The guy would get through the shorebreak with the bag deflated and open it up into the wind once he made it outside. Really fun to watch. I don't know if it was Al Santos I saw bag surfing, but I went to high school and surf...

Re: Rail curve, how does it work?

You have to remember that the concave on Wegener's boards was developed to address controlling a thin finless board ridden stand up. Prone boards where the riders legs and fins are in contact with the wave don't have as many control issues. On thin wood prone boards, I haven't found concaves making ...

Re: Papa Paepo o & duckdiving

I think he's talking about hanging on to your board while holding it towards your side and trying to push through the foam ball or face while leading with your shoulder. You're not really diving deep towards the bottom. If it's a real heavy situation, you don't really try to push through but you cro...

Re: My first build

Finished my board but it's a log in the water, too heavy and can't control (48" by 22" 3/4 inch left over birch plywood), only tried out once in 3' swells. Will be building more this winter out of red cedar 1/4" to 1/2". I think I need more concave and or some way to build up th...

Re: Riding position

Bob, Riding superman style on solid waves is definitely challenging. Doing the arm back style on steep pitching waves is even harder. Even the old masters have to put 2 hands on the rail sometimes. You can watch guys like Harry at big Makapu'u and be surprised how little they have to grab both rails...

Re: Riding position

And, a respectful question for those that employ the "superman' technique…why? I have a hard time envisioning, let alone experiencing benefit from that on paipos… obviously a standard and totally functional approach in body surfing as in your hand becomes a planing surface, but I'm stumped on ...

Reading the comments below the article, it looks like the authorities backed down in the face of protest or threat of lawsuit. It's amazing that this kind of anti-boogie prejudice is still harbored by the "authorities" in that area after all these years. Almost 20 yrs ago when I lived arou...

Re: Cork deck

I thought cork was impermeable, or at least extremely water resistant? I used cork for fishing floats, but I never saw it suck water even with rigs where the lead weight keeps the whole rig submerged and the cork is used just to keep the hook off the reef. The old skool cork automotive gaskets worke...

Re: Where are the waves?

The last couple of summers under La Nina influence have been much worse than average in my area. This summer is pretty poor too, but there have been more "rideable" days than last year. However, this past winter was one of the best ever. The run of solid surf with perfect conditions in Dec...

Re: T-Belly Generation 2

Thomas- You should take the fins off that board and go for some test surfs to compare. Your board is very bodyboard like in overall proportions and outline, seems like you could go without fins. Your experience with the board getting stuck in the wrong place in the barrel is very similar to my origi...

Re: My first build

Def build a board with the plywood. I don't care for 3/4" ply anymore because it doesn't have the flex that I like, but countless paipos have been made with it. Like you said, you can take off a lot of wood to get a rocker and concaves if you want. I wouldn't put a leash on it for safety reason...

Re: rail shape

Structurally, it's fine, but I need to seal it better. I don't use that board a lot and haven't subjected it to the heavy use/ abuse like my plywood boards. The original purpose of the board was just a party decoration. What's redwood cost these days?

Re: Kenu Hawaii - what can be done with soft foam?

Those boards have hard plastic bottoms like the original 80's Turbo bodyboards. In the last vid that shows the Kenu board line, it looks like he's still making a board similar to the old "Super Turbo" from the old days. That board had skegs and was about 48". I really wanted one as a ...
