Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards

I used to ride stand-up spoons aka hulls, shaped by various shapers. And I can tell you there is a feeling, coming out of the hole, that you just do not get on more conventional shapes including thrusters. A very different kind of acceleration feeling that does feel, in the case of more rigid stand-...

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards

Very different flex characteristcs as well w/ carbon-epoxy, stiffer, snappier, better memory

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards

We are not only on the same page but in the same sentence! "Twist like a dish towel" flex is a spot on image.

I love the simplicity and low cost of plywood but this twist-o-flex is something you can really dial in w/ fiberglass

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards

What I learned from Dale was that more recent iterations of GG design was torsional flex is what really gives you drive and any more than minimal longitudinal flex creates drag. A little long was is ok but if you have good snappy torsional flex that will change your rocker line in a turn but not bog...

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards

I thought most spoon kb's had all the foam on the rails? Forget his name off hand, but there is a guy in San Diego who made kneelos that did have all the foam in the middle (knee wells etc) and just glass blade out at the rails but he went flat bottom. How do you mean, "reverse spoon"?

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards

Have you ever tried one of these thinned waaaaay out, basically like a GG kneelo spoon? Probably not so great in smaller, weaker waves but duck diving ease could make it worth it for juice...

Re: A difference between designing a paipo and other boards

Soulglider, does the rocker change along with where the deepest part of hull is? Foot boards have that flat(ish) rocker area in front of fin for about 18 inches or so then a little lift in the tail. Do you continue the curve of the front rocker further back and then run it flat off the tail sort of ...

Re: Pirate Fish Alaia Remo II

If you wanted to go there, I would think the most efficient and functional way would be just build it like a GG spoon ie shape foam plug, glass bottom w/ 4-6 layers, shape out deck foam to final spoon shape and then glass deck. Fine tuning of glass thickness with grinder as needed... Right. Instead...

Re: Pirate Fish Alaia Remo II

Plywood will hold up better for sure but that is why I mentioned fiber glass etc above. You want not only flex and memory but the ability to hold up under repeated flexing. Even glassed, any core will eventually break down. Greenough used balsa in the rails of his early spoons and I think eventually...

Re: Pirate Fish Alaia Remo II

Do you think its possible to laminate a few layers together to get a stiffer board for the same thickness or even thinner ? Something like 10 or 12 layers of wood veneer with glass in between or maybe a foam core with the multiple veneer layers built up around the rails like on a Greenough spoon ? ...

When I was living North of SF (Sonoma coast) we had occasional periods in the upper 40's. I would get an ice cream headache just getting my feet in the water!

Gotta love those replays. And you can run them slomo with varied musical sound tracks. Just be careful while driving your car ;)

HAH! With UDT's instead of your feet moving and your body staying more or less still, your feet will stay almost stationary and your body will gyrate.

Re: Blue Plate Special

Hmmm, roll or vee up front would definitely mitigate some of the bounce and probably slow you down as well. I know though, that mats with their very soft flex, love texture and small bumps (emphasis on small!). On that sort of surface they seem to go even faster than on really smooth glassy waves. C...

Re: Blue Plate Special

Best way I know to quantify roll is use a level straight edge across bottom of board and measure difference between stringer and apex of rail ie the very widest point at that part of the board. Don't know if I said that clearly, its clear to me! Of course another variable is what you do with that di...

Doesn't Big Island have a bit colder water to because the steeper, volcanic mtns. run-off a lot more direct rain water? I was told that anyway.

Ok now, give it up! Let's hear an unbiased (HAH as if there were such a thing) report on the Wave Arrow...
